I noticed one of the Barred Rock chicks has a fair amount of dried up chicken poop on her rear end. I know, I know. She's still pooping ok, anything to worry about? I can't believe I'm asking this in a public forum.

Pasty butt can cause problems if it's allowed to block the vent. Just use a wet towel and clean it off. Usually a result of the temperature being a little on the cool side.

It's not blocking the vent as of yet. I tried a wet towel to soften it up, didn't work all that well.

Have fun with those birds Happy chickens are easy and fun to care for. I did some last year with a friends dad. Never again with a partner tho. He likes to be quick and half a$$ed, whereas I like to do things proper right the first time. We'll get back into it when we are better set up. Nothing like fresh eggs.

I can't believe how fast they're growing. Already flapping their little wings and jumping around trying to fly.

Well, got the pasty poop taken care of, gentle warm water spray and broke up the poop by hand. It definitely wasn't coming off on its own. I was told to put a tiny bit of vegetable oil on there to help it from sticking again. Got her all dried of and good to go. :)

We used to let them (13 barred rocks) walk in and out of their coop that we surrounded with a large enclosure, but something- raccoon climbed in and went after them. Now we lock them in every night, and open them up every day. As it gets later, they are always waiting inside. All winter, unless there is bare ground we keep them inside. Last fall the neighbor's dog got under the fence and killed 4 of them. We tracked the feathers across the road.
I always listen for a commotion and clucking- tells you what's up. We are down to two. Last one came down with a cold of some kind. We've had them for six years or so. Our two have started laying again, egg each a day. We are thinking of some more barred rocks.
I'd like a rooster, but the last one wore the feathers off their backs, and the feathers at the back of their head. He was feisty and every three days went after us as well!
When we are home, I like to let them roam free on the lawn.
When young, they'd come and hop up on my lap if I was sitting on the deck!

Thanks Green Power. Called the feed store today, they said it can happen and will get us another chick in a couple weeks when they get more in. Looking4new do you have a pic of your coop? Sounds nice.

I will get one, soon. It is raining here right now and I don't want to get my camera wet.

I do hope the neighbours dog got put down for that.
If not, it will be back.

If you want fertile eggs, that is the only reason for a rooster.

You need a minimum of 2 square feet/chicken of floor space. 6 chickens in a 4x4 works good.

Been enjoying thread thanks for posting !
Hey Gilmore I think you can get a good deal at the TSC in Wash/DC on these "OLD HENS" ! Might cost You more to feed them though ! :D

Feeding that trio wouldn't cost me a penny, chicken poop comes for free, and hey, at least they'd be getting their protein.

Looking4new, thank you for the ideas. When the rain stops, a pic would be great.

The chicks have been making one heck of a mess with the small poultry drinker and feeder both sitting on the bottom of the tub. They've been pooping in them and kicking shavings all over the place. That being said I've had to change the water multiple times a day. Yesterday I opted to invest in a 1 gallon hanging poultry drinker and 7lb hanging feeder. Much better! No more mess. They've also been relocated to a large dog crate to keep them contained. After the first week, one of them managed to get out of the galvanized tub I had them in. 3/4 of the tub was covered to help keep heat in. The only reason I knew of the "escape" was the evidence of chick poop on the cover. When I looked, all five of them were back in the tub. Temporarily I placed chicken wire over the tub to keep them contained. Now on to the dog crate. I bought a roll of plastic chicken wire at TSC and zip tied it around the dog crate to prevent the chicks from squeezing out the openings around the crate until they get bigger. I also cut a piece of rubber mat to line the crate's plastic bottom tray. The poultry drinker and feeder are suspended from the top of the crate by heavy zip ties attached to a "S" hook. The "S" hook makes removing them easy for cleaning and change outs. The heat lamp also hangs very nicely from the top of the crate. Working great so far!

Here's a good source for chicken lovers.
Raising BackYard Chickens, Build a Chicken Coop, Pictures of Breeds

My daughter keeps hinting at chickens. I'd like them for meat, but she wants them for eggs. I can see it now. Several hundred dollars wrapped up in coop, fencing, feed, litter, etc.... for a dollars worth of eggs every week!

Fortunately for us, a family of foxes moved into the back yard!

Here is my temporary "in the house coop" until the chicks get bigger and the outside temps get warmer.

Build as big a coop as you can manage- you'll appreciate it later. There will be fewer hassles between the chickens if they can get away from each other. Only the highest ranking chickens will get the roosts at night, need plenty of options for them.

I think we already have a highest ranking chick, lol. We call her Feisty.
