No thanks. I forgot to turn the fence off a couple of weeks ago and backed into the tape with with a wet sweaty shirt. This at .75 joules. Wife saw me do this and got a good laugh. And this gave me a bad attitude the rest of that day.

To a point I guess on joules. We have a single strand of tape around our woven wire fence. Some places, that are over 2,000 feet from the charger, the tape gets loosened by wind during the winter and sometimes touches the top of the woven wire. This will burn our tape where it touches the woven wire. Just with .75 joules. I don't want my wife to have the satisfaction of seeing me hit by 18 joules.:)

I just bought some Intellirope from Premier 1 supplies. It is less expensive equivalent of the Electrobraid. IntelliRope® PE 4.5 - Premier1Supplies

I have not gotten it up yet but it looks good. They say the 4.5 diameter is better for the temporary fencing that you doing. Rick

Rick after a lot of reading I do think the IntelliRope PE 4.5 is a great option. It has copper in it like Electrobraid but for the price of 1000' of it you can get well over 3000' of the IntelliRope PE 4.5

If I was going to build for the long haul I would go for the PE 6.0. If we go ahead and enclose a larger area I may go to the trouble of setting a metal gate so the horses know it is a shock free zone. As a kid we had a hard time to get the first cow to come though an OPEN electric fence gap. :(

I know next to nothing about horses but definitely know my way around electric fencing.

You guys need to at least check out the Stafix x6i (6 joules). It has a remote/fault finder, by touching it to the wire it will show you the voltage and point towards the nearest short in the fence line, then you can turn the charger off by using the same remote. After you are done fixing the problem the remote can turn the charger back on.

I have two x6i chargers with remotes, set up where either remote with operate either charger. One charger runs on 120v and the other on a deep cycle battery and two 40w solar panels with voltage regulators. The ability to turn them off/on from anywhere on the farm is a huge time saver for us.

Stafix also sell just the fault finder (they call it a fence compass iirc), without remote capabilities that will work with any charger. No matter which charger you have I would HIGHLY recommend one, also a big time saver for trouble shooting.

Probably the most awesome charger that I have ever seen. It is expensive but I sure would like to have one.

Stafix X6i Unigizer with remote 6 Joule

$600 charger should be good. I like that it is AC/DC too.

I was reading tonight how you need to train your animals so we will build a small area fence for training so they do not run though it the first thing. The year old colt is all boy for sure.

Horses are a lot of fun and comfort. I can't imagine having gone through life with out them. There is nothing more beautiful than sitting down in the evenings and watching the horses. But they can be a lot of trouble to take care of. The trouble has been very worthwhile for us.

About training your animals, I am going through this right now with about 25 "guest" heifers that are here to be bred then returned to their real home. They have never been exposed to electric and would probably run right through it with out a little training.

What I do is... start with the animals in a lot with a "physical barrier" type fence such as woven wire, corral panels, board, ect. (Electric is a psychological barrier) then run a short temporary electric fence (inside) parallel to to the "real" fence a few feet away.

Animals are generally curious and will figure it out in a very short time.

Thanks bullbreaker for that link. If I was going to build a real fence the Cyclops would be at the top of my list.

Around here it is hard to have a garden because of the deer and I know this charger would be great for that.
