What's the reception range on something like that? I would like to try OTA rather than dish. If the range was good, I could make that and try it without cancelling service or sinking an investment in an antenna.
the stations i get transmit 30 miles from here and a couple of thousand feet lower in elevation.

thanks for the scientific explanation dave r.

nice setup :) !

the soft "ear plugs" works as nice protective ends of the wires.

add 2 to 3 feet of board to one of the ends to raise it off ground. makes for placing it easier. without getting poked as well

made myself one as well. and refuse to go back to any store bought antennas. this DIY antenna outshines all other antennas for range / reception / signal strength. well i take that back higher above / roof mounted antenna is going to be only thing that beats this.

anyone know why i can get fox at night but not during the day?
Perhaps you've tried this, but go to TVFool.com (Click Here), enter your street address, city, state, zip and the elevation of the antenna above the ground, and it will list lots of information about the OTA stations, how their signal gets to you, etc. Using a simple antenna in my attic, I can receive all the broadcast channels and several sub channels for each.

Where did you place the antenna? In the attic? In the house?

in the house beside the main tv, i either prop it up against the wall, or set it up on a cabinet. the extra length on bottom lets me place it behind other objects on cabinet and not get hung up on crud. or set it behind a floor speaker.

with aluminum siding, and tv stations spread out far enough apart, and living out in middle of no were. i do have to move the antenna. for some stations more so bad weather. and trying to get them stations clear away from me, that i would not normally get with some store bought antenna.

i also have a piece of plywood with aluminum foil (kitchen foil ya use for cooking) on one side. ((need to make sure wrinkle free)) that i can place behind it. to focus everything better. with the 2x6 lumber that the hangers are attach to. it holds the wires off just enough from the foil. and seems to work pretty good. but i have for most part abandoned the aluminum foil on plywood. due to only extra channels i pick up. are exact same "copy" channels per say but from another large city. (different news, but same shows doing), to also note it, the aluminum foil on plywood can cause interference on certain stations, it causes to much single bouncing around in home.

it would be nice to place this homemade antenna up in the attic or up on the roof. but i would still want to be able to rotate it some.

the home made antenna and foil on plywood, i have tried at my mom's house, and at a cabin back on the farm. both in basement, main level, and roof. and the home made antenna has won, vs all other antennas i have tried. with exception like noted before. a roof mounted antenna. that can rotate more likely to win out vs anything out there.

Yep, that's it randy! I'm away from mine so couldn't take pic, but that's the same one I made, except I used PVC pipe I already had. Put that rascal high enough, ye'll get signals from space station! All digital. That is a proper "digital" antenna.

I made one of these and I can't get it to work. Any trouble shooting tips?
