According to my book, air only gets in, through a leaking suction line, as DMW suggested.

Also check your FEL return line, and the control valve.

There could possibly be some tell tale oil leakage, after the engine is turned off, that could help you find the leak.

750 psi definitely low. I would guess you should have 2500 psi.

See what the pressure is, if you disconnect the FEL. And, try the same with the backhoe.

Good idea. The FEL control valve may not be fully shifting allowing the loader arms to go into detent, or damaged o rings on the spool allowing oil to go back to tank.
Check pressure on the FEL and backhoe. Should narrow the search.
FWIW my control arm gets very stiff sometimes, feels like the o rings on the spool are binding at times. Still works so I haven't touched it yet.

Well guys ... I think a bit of information I left out may tell the problem-- The gauge shows 1300psi lifting the loader when cold. Still only 750psi when hot.

I put the gauges on the backhoe lines and got the same readings.

I casually looked around the suction line area, but didn't see anything that out of the ordinary.

I hear the pressure drop when hot likely means I have a bad pump. If this is the case, is this the same pump that gets replaced for the short spline issue? And servicing the machine for either issue should fix both?

If you have a 2005, it may have the "short spline" defect.

There was once a thread that a member did, which included the part number of the pump that is too short. This number is on the pump. If you search, you should be able to find it.

I believe the gear that drives the pump has been modified, and also needs to be replaced. While the pump can be serviced by removal of the floorboard, the gear requires the removal, and dis-assembly of the transmission.

No one has ever said if it is worth doing preemptively.

If your pump has in fact failed, it would be the first that I know of, aside from those that sheared. Which causes me to continue to wonder if the previous owners carelessness, caused it's failure?

I do know that the previous owner's brother-in-law knocked off the hydraulic filter (I have since installed the skid plate for that) ... Maybe he didn't realize and ran it too hard dry? But by the way he disclosed this fact it sounded like he noticed immediately and it didn't hurt anything.

I don't understand how the spline would have slippage without totally shearing off and becoming inoperable. But other people have said they've noticed symptoms before total failure. So who knows.

I have heard of "symptoms" just before failure. But, I have not head of this.

Did you check the drain oil for metal? If you still have the old filter, cut it open, and look for metal. Some small metal particles is normal.

You can pull the pump in a couple hours. Then, you will know if the spline is damaged.

Perhaps you can find someone who can test the pump for you?

I finally am getting around to this. I've been using the tractor for other stuff over the last months and didn't want to tear it apart and lose usage until the winter.

I'm trying to pull the pump. I got off the floorboard, but nothing looked obviously like a pump:

I was researching, and I think I need to look for something like this:

Any guidance on where to start?

I know i am late in replying here, but i need to know if you teed in the test gauge pure dead headed it?

I believe the pump is the black square, located directly behind the 3pt control in your photo.
