VW Clean diesels.... how did they get them so clean?

The thread on the HPFP blowup is huge on TDIClub. I followed it some. So you've never seen metal flakes in your fuel filter changes? Our 06 had the dual mass flywheel problem. I kept an eye on it and when I saw it throw grease everywhere I changed it out to a single mass flywheel before it actually came apart.

Nope, and just recently VW sent out a form letter admitting the HPFP problem and offering to reimburse cost of repair if it happens before 120,000 miles/10 years . But I've been adding fuel lubricant since fill one.
As an aside our oldest bought a Passat TDI late last year, never used a fuel additive and his exploded this summer. VW picked up the repair tab and loaner vehicle cost. And then VW provided a jug of fuel additive and advised him to use it.

What sort of additive? Do you have to pour a bottle into the filler at each refueling?

If people just add 2-cycle oil to their diesel for lubricity, I'll bet even a conforming car won't pass a legitimate smog test.

Good, Ive been doing the same. Interesting VW is now recommending it. I always felt like this was one of the cases where fuel in Europe is better quality than US and they didn't design to US fuel.

I always use PowerService ... would be interesting to know what VW recommends. They used to be against it.

Just wow. To grossly oversimplify , what I saw was: First page: average failure at 16k miles, repair $8,000. Relatively new car out of service several days. Lots of arguments with some flaky dealers who claimed bad fuel. Last page of the thread averages: 'Several pumps replaced in life of car, some disputes that bad fuel caused it, now beyond warranty, won't run, parked, (in one case 3.000 miles from home), contacting an attorney'. One post said considering cost of repairs he could have averaged 19 mpg over life of a cheaper car and would be money ahead.

If VW has had this expensive fuel system problem throughout this generation of TDI cars I'll be amazed if they can fix the current pollution issue and include a substantial warranty - as many regulatory agencies are sure to require.

Heck we (California) can't even run non-conforming diesels as a ditch pump any more, they have to be sold out of state.

That's because our ag regions have some of the most smog-polluted air in the country.

My neighbor just gave up on his IH 10-ton harvest truck after several ag-only (low miles) deadline extensions, and replaced it with a used newer model that needed a $10,000 urea-injection upgrade before he could put it in service. Air here near the coast is great ... because our smog blows over to the Central Valley and piles up against the Sierras - where it gags everybody there. (Photo) and post describing the photo.

Lots of good equipment has been forced out of state... a little while back I posted about a friend with a year 2000 International Dump he bought new for his mom and pop business beautiful truck... really looked like new and he could not get 5k for it in California...

Same with the tree chippers, ditch pumps, concrete pumps...

Already bought a dump truck. I'd like a chipper though! Probably not cheap to ship one across the country though.

Most went to auction or wholesalers in Oregon and Nevada.

Local Utilities bought a lot of new equipment... even the local well drillers had to buy new...

It represents a major shift in policy... previously, older equipment was grandfathered... no longer the case if used for any business enterprise.

Yes, when they switched from A4 to A5 platform, the BRM engine had more HP, torque, and the vehicle weighed more than the previous model but they still put the same dual mass flywheel in the early 05.5 and 06 models. The two flywheels are connected with some kind of material that gives some to reduce vibration. The one I had was filled with some kind of heavy grease and spewed it all over the bell housing when it started to mess up. Single Mass Flywheel ensures it won't happen again (plus they can take the torque better).
