"...like new 2013 .... with 63,000 miles for about the same price as a 2015-2016 work truck package..."

63,000 miles is a lot of miles for a vehicle 2 (and now 3) model-years old.

My wife's 2006 car, purchased new, has right about 63,000 miles on it. We hope to get another 5 years or so out of it, maybe more. If we had bought it used with 63,000 miles, it is unlikely that we could have expected 15 years (or maybe even 10 years) out of it before having to replace it. We would have been back in the car-buying market probably before now.

We keep vehicles a very long time, we start with new vehicles, and we only buy vehicles with a minimum amount of "bells and whistles" on them.

My personal opinion is that I would rather spend the same money on a new Vehicle(with less options) with zero-miles, more or less, and the full warranty, than on a "loaded" used vehicle with a lot of miles on it.

Other's opinions may differ.

How is that alot of miles for a vehicle. My 05 duramax has 425,000. That's alot. My buddy who I got this truck from 13 duramax is running around 200,000 miles. That's alot for being 2 years old. Got to love the life of construction

For every story where someone claims to have driven a vehicle for a million miles, there is another story where problems have cropped up rather quickly. This forum is full of stories of people with late model vehicles that have issues.

A Duramax I saw advertised on Craigslist a while back comes to mind: 150,000 miles and the itemized list of recent repairs to just the
engine totaled in excess of $3,500.00

In all fairness, there are complaints about all brands, not just Chevrolet, so I don't think anyone can really count on a quarter-mile miles of trouble-free service from any vehicle. Maybe you'll get it, and maybe you won't.

I would rather forgo the bells and whistles in exchange for a vehicle with virtually zero miles and a known history. 63,000 miles is several years of driving for us. I don't see any advantage to trading several years of vehicle use in exchange for chrome-plated plastic in lieu of black plastic, leather seats instead of cloth or vinyl, heated steering wheel, and so forth.

For the same money, I will go new.

Wait, so are you getting the LR and the F150? Or has something else put you off the pickup?

Probably is a steal... Dealerships love for buyers to give them their vehicles. while you pay top dollar for theirs

Not sure I agree with that. Around here the dealers won't put anything older that 5-6 years old on their lot, regardless of the mileage. Anything older than that just goes to auction where it gets bought by the small timers that have a used car lot and are willing to put a little bit of time into the vehicle to "buff it up" before they put it on the lot. The used stuff on a dealer lot is mostly off-lease vehicles and late model trade-ins. They won't give you much for your 10 year old car because they aren't going to get much for it at the auction, regardless of the mileage or clean upholstery. The dealer service bays are for servicing client cars that pay them $100 per hour, not fixing up stuff for sale. The most effort they put into a car they are going to sell is to detail it and put on newer tires if they are too worn. May be different where you are, but that is the way it seems to work around here.

My brother bought the LR in 2006... it has been his pride and joy, ranch vehicle, tow the stock trailer vehicle... etc., plus pickup the kids/family

It's just now he REALLY needs a pickup/higher towing capacity so he was going to trade the Rover towards a new F150 and the Dealer said because it is so clean... they could allow him $4750... which got me to thinking... for 5% of what he paid it could be mine???

The Rover regularly tows 6,000 to 7,000 pounds and is rated for more... it's weak spot is tongue weight which is limited.

you should consider the sales tax break he would get from deducting the $4750 from the price of the new truck and add that to your offer.

I was going to say the same thing, but you beat me to it. :)

If he trades it in, that $4750 comes off the price of his new vehicle before he pays tax on it, so the value is actually 4750 plus whatever sales tax is in your area.

Unfortunately it does not work this way in California... tax is due on full sales price without regard to trade.

California makes a lot of money from vehicle sales and even more since trades cannot be deducted from the taxable amount...

Tax runs about 10% statewide...

A few months back I found him a 1996 F150 4 wd 6 cyl with a 5 speed manual thinking it would be ideal to keep the Rover from always doing the heavy lifting... truck was owned by a retired fellow that bought it as a retirement present for himself...

The sales tax on the new F150 would cover the purchase of the 96 including sales tax and several years of license fees... it was a no go since it does not have 4 doors...

I have the exact same feelings on new vs used. Why would I want a fully loaded truck with 150,000 km for the exact same price as I could have a brand new base model of the exact same truck? Especially around my area, on the 3/4 and 1 tons. Mat have lift kits, huge ugly lights, massive tires that just aren't practical for daily use etc... I really don't want some bodies project truck.

With rare exception... I prefer my vehicles stock or nearly so.

The reason is the money put into mods often compromises the value/performance not to mention the cost of doing the mod.

One of the neighbor girls bought a brand new F150 4wd truck when she was 18 with her dad's co-signature... she made all the payments and paid for a lot of mods... lift kit, exhaust, wheels, tires, etc... the was in 2000... 3 years later she decided she no longer wanted a truck and then learned the hard truth all the mods she had made ended up costing her...

The Dealer explained most of the kids that want these simply don't have the money to buy them used and many lenders will not lend.
