For a data point, my 770 with model 70 loader is rated somewhere around 700 lbs lift. The lift and curl is not very strong, and I bet after all of theses years, being heavily used for plowing and probably set weak at the factory, it probably in the 500 lb range now. It will move a bucket full of gravel though.
My SS has a larger bucket on it, and it struggles with a bucket full of soil. The lift is much stronger than tilt, and therefore right when the bucket is full of soil and the tilt is slow, that is all it will take safely. Unfortunately the lift arms are very strong and will tip the machine easily if lifted too quickly (which is easy to do). I wish it were the other way around, but I have no doubt the loader arms will pick the rated 1300 lbs. I need to pony up and fix my smaller bucket for general use and save the bigger one for snow.
LD - I like your analogies.
