Hey WoodChuckDad,

Sure thankful it turned out so good for you. Until it's over you just never can tell these days. Thank you for letting us know how it turned out. Best wishes for a fruitful orchard.

Nice outcome.

Sure a lot different outcome and reasoning for him being there than if you would have just called the cops or some of the other suggestions in this thread.

Nice that it worked out.

... Fully agree, but enlighten us, what are the rules down under? Just wondering.

Well, as I mentioned before, "Different State, different rules." And, yes, Australia is made up of States & Territories.

Here in Tassie pertaining to privately owned land (as opposed to State or Crown Land):

... under s14(b) of the Police Offences Act. The act states:

14B. Unlawful entry on land

(1) A person, without reasonable or lawful excuse (proof of which lies on the person), must not enter into, or remain on, any land, building, structure, premises, aircraft, vehicle or vessel without the consent of the owner, occupier or person in charge of the land, building, structure, premises, aircraft, vehicle or vessel.

(2) A person who is convicted of an offence under this section is liable to a penalty of

(a) a fine not exceeding 10 penalty units or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months, in respect of entering or remaining in a dwelling-house; or

(b) 5 penalty units or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months, in respect of entering into, or remaining on, any other land, building, structure, premises, aircraft, vehicle or vessel.

(2A) However, if the court that convicts a person of an offence under this section is satisfied that the person

(a) was in possession of a firearm during the actual commission of the offence; or

(b) made any use of an aircraft, vehicle or vessel during the actual commission of the offence

the person is liable to a penalty not exceeding twice that provided for by subsection (2).

So, no signs/markings need be posted. If it's not yours or you don't have permission then stay off of it. We're pretty laid back around here.

I stopped by at lunch today. Introduced myself. I pointed out hat I had the place posted and that he had been walking thru with a rifle. He immediately apologized and said they were looking for a lost dog. I handed him my number, told him I understand and asked him to drop me a call next Time something comes up so I'm not surprised to see pictures on my cameras. We talked for a bit and he said he had seen the camera and was worried he was ruining Someone's hunt. Said he only had the rifle because they have been seeing a large bear lately and thought a 22 was better than just yelling. I showed him the picture of the guy who was checking out my tractor and asked if he knew who it was. He didn't and said it is unusual to have anyone come down the rode who doesn't live there. It's about 3/4 mile dirt road, dead-end and only 6 homes. He thanks me for being nice about it and I went on my way. Seems like it worked out pretty well to me.
I also stopped by the vineyard that owns the 100 acres of hunting land bordering my place and left my name and number in case hey needed to get hold of me. Pointed out that I had seen some people on cameras and figured I should reach out to the neighbors. I had already
stopped by to drink wine when we were looking at our place and they seem decent.

Glad that worked out well for you. And now you have a neighbor to wave to and keep an eye on your place when you're not around.

Looks like hickok45 from the youtube.... https://www.youtube.com/user/hickok45

This is funny.., at least to me it's funny. I was searching for info on a Savage Model 99 in .300 and a YouTube video by hickok45 came up. That was a good video and ironic that same man was mentioned in this thread. He's a good shot too, btw.

Yeah, I like his videos. Not too preachy and he shoots stuff for the enjoyment.

There are signs every 20 yds. And the gate is clearly posted.

Yep, that is pretty clearly marked. No mistakenly wandering by and not seeing the signs.

Having horses makes it easy for me to take on a new piece of property. Good fences make good neighbors and electric makes them even better. So, when I fence it is obviously to keep the animals enclosed and not the neighbors out though it does do that. I leave enough space to maintain the property usually around 12-14 feet. My last place had no good cover for hunting but neighbors would ask permission to walk between ajacent farms and I always let them. The neighborhood youth would also use my right of way to go from one place to another with their ATV's but always respected me and did not tear it up. On occasion I would meet one while out walking or on my tractor. They would kind of hesitate but I would wave and they would wave and be on their way. I also used to put on camo while hunting groundhogs. That was pretty frequent as I would average about sixty hogs a year. Not being a hard azz has maybe kept me from ever having someone do something to my place or my animals.

My neighbor has a pretty large wood lot in preservation. Once a month the local newspaper publishes a list of no tresspassing properties, one of which on the list is his. That does not stop the coon hunters. There was some remnant barb wire fencing on our property lines when we moved here. After asking if he would mind, I took it all out to let the deer move more freely. Dogs being dogs, one of the coon hunting groups were getting onto our property and too close to my barn which would upset my high strung Arab gelding. Guess I should have left that barb wire up? LOL! After the second time I asked them to try to not come that close. I did not ask them to not come onto my property. I have also had the coon hunters ask permission to come and retrieve dogs on occasion which I allow with no lecture. I even offer to go out and shut off my fence.

Anyway, I try to live and let live. However, if someone was walking down my driveway which is 600 feet long and fenced on both sides with a side arm and a long gun, I think I would call the sheriff first rather than to step out with my own weapon(s). Though, I would be watching and ready.

Lastly, I had a friend some twenty years ago who's father was a diplomat. Having lived all over the world, he was fluent in some nine languages or so. He also served in Viet Nam so he could change from that jolly guy to a look that would send shivers. Let's just say he had something to do with interrogations during his tour. He had a bunch of people out back on his property one day that may have been the ones trashing the place on occasion. So, side arm under cover, he walked out to speak with them. They did not figure that this fat jolly guy would know what they were saying in their language but when he pulled back his shirt and gave them five minutes to clear out they got the message.
