Any company I ever worked for has always wanted yes men. Regardless of all the lip service about wanting to know what employees think. They say one thing and when push comes to shove they want you to shut your mouth and toe the company line. VW is no different. Many people must have know about this and kept their mouth shut. "We don't want yes men" Balderdash.. yes they do.

Pretty much the way it is unless you are bold enough to put it all on the line realizing it may cost you your job or chance for a promotion.

VW is huge worldwide company that built a car to pass the "Test" and provide top of class performance across the board.

They gambled and lost...

Because "Passing" the test violated the spirit/intent of the law...

Too bad because everyone I knew with one prior to the scandal were singing the praises of the small VW diesel and a lot of my friends live in Germany and Austria...

I've driven them and the Audi equivalent and was very impressed...

That said... States like California could very well refuse to renew registrations... which would effectively leave a person with a new or newer car not legal for the road...

I spent 26 years as an engineer for US auto company including a stint in the emissions and fuel economy area. We had separate departments to develop emissions systems and to validate their performance. Compliance progress was tracked at the VP level. The suggestion that a few rogue engineers pulled this off is truly laughable.

I agree. However it is possible that the CEO and board were unaware. Certainly many high level engineers knew especially since the deception went on for almost ten years. One also has to consider the difference in US vs German culture generally when it comes to things like whistleblowing or disagreeing with teammates or superiors. Still, I agree that there were more than a few engineers who knew about this. The fact that VW has already sacked their top engineers indicates as much. Question now is who will be left to manage and engineer the fix once they clean house.

I also find it rather surprising that any company of that size would allow the same team that designs a product to do the testing.

I agree. VW had ggressive top down leadership by highly accomplished, detail oriented engineers for 20 years. But a handful of rogue engineers did this on their own - across several brands and on several continents - and nobody knew. Nobody asked, Gee, how did you get all that performance while meeting the emissions standards. Some one will write a book years from now and sort it all out.

Would one say that was the "rogue elephant" in the room! :D
