Ariens log splitter--should'a kept my old log splitter!

Nothing inherently wrong with a 3PH type, but they are just as pricey or even more than a gas stand alone. The 3PH ones that tie to the tractor hydraulics can be pretty slow.

In either case, I like to use the tractor for other things while splitting. Like shuttling trailers around, moving rounds closer to the splitter, etc.

My best friend has a PTO pump powered splitter and swears by it. The one less motor thing. I noticed no one on this thread mentioned one. I am wondering why?

For me, it's all about having it ready to use, or sitting next to the wood to use whenever I have a bit of time available. If I had my log splitter attached to my tractor, that means I couldn't do anything else with it until I took it off and installed what I wanted on it. I like to keep my bush hog on it most of the time. Then I can mow after work, or on the weekend, or whenever I feel the mood. Taking time to hook it up ruins the mood for me. :)

I can tow my log splitter with my Mule or my pickup truck. Since it's on tires, I can even pull it around by hand for short distances.

That's NOT true if you compare splitters of the same capacity and quality... At least, it's certainly not true if you compare a stand alone to my 3 point splitter.

All of my firewood logs are cut to firewood lengths over my wagon, or a trailer, so I don't need another tractor when I'm splitting. I also don't need to do any heavy lifting or bending over to re-split a piece, in fact, the splits go off the end of the table grate, so I don't have to keep handling them.

^^^That is quite an impressive splitter you have.

I put in a call and there is one Dealer in several hundred miles of me... they have to quote prices with limited stock.

The picture of the forked truck looks wicked.

What kind of hydraulic flow and pressure does you tractor put out?

I'm guess that splitter set you back a pretty penny...

What are you guys getting for hardwood cords?

Here, with the drought, a lot of Almond is showing up... folks really can't burn anymore... at least not when it is cold outside.

I'm finding prices all over the place... 150 to 375 for seasoned and split with free local driveway delivery...

My splitter is powered by a 20 GPM pump that slips onto the pto, the splitter is self contained...

I've yet to find anything that it won't push through the "slip over" 4-way, let alone the 12" tall wedge! And BTW, the 4-way came with it.

All the components are top quality, it's the last splitter I'll ever need to buy and yes, you do have to pay more for "quality" tools that AREN'T made in china!

When I was buying, I called around and found a dealer who would deal!

My unit is USA made in Washington State... it's about 25 years old and has never missed a beat... hate to let it out of my sight because the first thing someone will say if there is a problem is it's old...

Have lot of oak laying around my brother's ranch... I went out one weekend with my splitter in tow and Mom and I split a couple of cords for him and now they love the LOPI stove that came with the place.

I've been telling my nephew he could make some money selling cut and split wood... they are at a major county intersection where everyone has to stop... just parking a pickup/trailer with wood and a Wood For Sale sign and I'm sure it will sell itself.

I'm in the city so wood is a non-starter here... people pay to have downed oaks hauled away...

My Arians starts on the first pull the only problem was they had to replace the yolk.

My splitter was probably 30+ years old; was a rental unit before I bought it. Brand unknown. 5 hp Briggs engine unknown tonnage rating for hydraulics. The valve was getting tired and the cylinder was leaking.

Sold it, got a new Ariens, 6 hp, 27 ton. Looks prettier, but otherwise I'm not impressed. Old one started on 3rd pull every time. Ariens, not so good, gotta have the throttle set just right and the throttle arm needs to be an inch or two longer for better leverage; it's really tight. Takes 4-6 pulls. Ok, got it running and it doesn't split better or faster than the old one & doesn't handle large logs as well. When it gets a tough piece it slows and almost gives up, while the old one just slowed down a little then plowed right on thru. Biggest peeve is splitting kindling. I like to split thin pieces about 3/4 inch thick or less, usually 16-18" long, best if the pieces come off shaped like a shim so the thin end lights right up and burns into the thicker portion. No problem on the old one. But on the Ariens the wedge is so wide (4.5") that half way along the log the proposed kindling breaks in 2. I'm splitting Douglas-fir and cherry.

Some one posted a positive review of the Ariens which influenced me a little in making my purchase. I wouldn't recommend it.

The Subaru engine in my little Ariens always starts on either the first or second pull, even when I'd run the previous tank dry and the engine is cold. It's not the strongest splitter out there, but it's good enough for the oak rounds I have, the biggest if which is "only" 18". One of the reasons I went with the Ariens is that there is a dealer network available should it ever need parts or service. My concern with the TSC, Lowes, Northern Tools, etc. brands is going back to the store (if there even is a store) and having a clerk look at me like I had three eyeballs if I brought it in for service. But here we are three years later and the only thing I've had to do to it is change the engine oil once and keep it fed with E0.

Kindling wise, I just collect the chunks and pieces that seem to occur naturally during splitting. Never even occurred to me that I'd actually have to make kindling.

If you're having starting problems with the one you have, get in touch with a dealer and see what they'll do for you. It's still under warranty, right?

YMMV, and obviously has.

I've got an old Duer 22 ton unit made in Washington State...

Can honestly say the little Briggs Engine just keeps on chugging along and easy to start.

Simple design and vertical/horizontal.

My biggest problem is everyone wants to borrow it... and I'm not comfortable because not everyone is carefull... both safety wise and equipment wise.

I would like to know who makes something comparable today as two people I know have asked me what to buy...

I guess Northern is still the place with lots to choose from?

You still around?... Do you still have the DUERR.... Just picked up dead unit made around 1990... B&S is sort of dead and parts for 30 engine are about and much as new engine... Label on unit says 22 ton manual say 20 ton... Oh well...
