What can I tow ? Sooooo confused

Your truck being equipped with the V6 non EcoBoost is limited to a max trailer weight of 5,600# per Ford. Per Ford also any trailer over 5,000# requires a WD hitch.

So to simplify things.

Max Tow: 5,600#
Max Tow Without WD: 5,000#

He asked what it is rated for. That is what a Class 4 receiver is rated for.

Oh boy.

With your engine and gearing combination, things will get a little uncomfortable at around 7000 lbs. Your chassis will certainly take that, but you will be working the drivetrain. The number you see in your owners manual is the "suggested" maximum. Your legal maximums are found on the drivers door sticker. Those are the numbers you may not exceed legally.

Any trailer rated for more than 3000 lbs is required by law to have at least one braking axle. Braking is not an issue

Your bumper receiver is rated for up to 10,000 lbs by itself. It's up to you to select the stinger and ball of the correct capacity.

It is highly recommended to use a weight distribution setup for anything over 5000 lbs. Particularly RV's.

Not too worried about the 7000 #. Never gonna tow that . Funny thing is there is no mention of tow weight on door stickers . That 's why I had to got to charts . Yes, trailer brakes are a must at those limits . Also I 'm a big fan of weight distribution .

Kinda funny because I don 't own a cargo trailer that can load above 2000# ,but I might win the lotto one day :thumbsup: . Kind of a guy thing . We just like to know what our trucks can do, in case

I've never seen tow weight on a door sticker, only GCVW. To get trailer weight you have to weigh your truck, in the condition you will be using it, then subtract that weight from the GCVW.

Chris, that 's what I was thinkin' from the charts, but I wanted to see what others on TBN thought independently . I don 't know much about camper trailers, but I 'm wondering where that number fits in with campers size with cargo.

Remember I have 3.7 L engine, 3.55 axle, and 145" wheelbase .

Ah, I didn't read that far. So like Chris wrote, 5,600 with WD. Of course a good WD might weigh 100lbs by itself!

I don't think that is exactly right. My F-350 and Chevy 3500 say 9,900. I have never had the ford on the scales, but the Chevy is over 7,000 empty. Either truck can tow more than 3,000 pounds. The Chevy is licensed for 16,000.

What I meant is now called GCWR, not GCVW, which may be an old term, or just my old memory. Anyway, the term with the "C" for "combined" or "combination" is the weight limit for the tow vehicle and trailer.

GVW or GVWR is the truck alone, if I have my letters correct.

You only factor in the tongue weight of the trailer. Typically 10~12% of the loaded trailer for a bumper pull.
