Here's a good tractor scam:
Examples:
CL, Wash. DC
New.Holland 2`0034X4 Hydro Tractor 30 hp Shibaura N843 dieselAGCY - $2511 (Aspen Hill)

CL, Ocala
New-Holland ^2003diesel 30 hp Loader Shibaura N843 Backhoef2QC - $2511 (United States)

Now I expect most people that could spend $2,511 on a tractor would recognize this price was too good to be true.

Are they collecting numbers of stupid people? Phishing for CC numbers?

Now doesn't that look nice for $2,511? And why XX11?

I saw that one on the Boston CL yesterday too. Flagged it.

I don't know why these scam artists insist on weird asking prices (xx11) but it is a great clue that the listing is fraudulent. The other big clue is when they post their email or contact info in the photo or description rather than using the official CL contact system.

Yep- and somewhere out there is the real owner of that machine -Probably doesn't even know His tractors picture is being used in an attempt to rip someone off...

Nice looking tractor

To the op buy enough tractor the first time,
jmo but rather have a good used gear tractor that is up to the job than a shiny new under sized machine that is under powered or overloaded.

Truly a wealth of info and experienced opinions here. I appreciate all the input. Glade makes some great points again, and a great list of potential applications! I thought I pretty much knew what I wanted before my first post, but now I'm really re-thinking the whole approach.

I'll have to research some stand-alone mowers to start. Once I narrow things down I'll probably have to start a new thread, but for now I am getting a lot out of the conversation.

Re: used equipment... Having zero tractor experience I am a little wary of repairs or even being able to evaluate a used machine. Would feel better w/new for the warranty/dealer support. Maybe tractor #2 I will be confident enough to go used.

Having said that, i'll keep my eyes open for deals, and if i find a trustworthy dealer with a good used item I'd consider it.

Regarding zero turn mowers - what is the benefit of these over your standard riding lawnmower? Are they just faster? Clearly, again, have some research to do. Thanks.

Much faster then a tractor or even a lawn tractor or riding mower..frequently, wider mower decks too (can be had with a 72" deck, but IMHO, a 60" deck is optimal)

Quick update:

I went to the Kubota dealer (Chappell Tractor) yesterday. Was great to see some machines in person, and had a very helpful sales person who spent some time to show me the basics.

Looking at a bunch of Kubota's sitting next to each other, the one I zero'd in on was the B2601. I got a quote on this at $18400 w/loader and quick attach bucket. Didn't try to haggle at all. (Not looking to buy til May so I didn't want to waste their time). But this should be near budget w/a 3pt mower.

The B2601 looked great, has some nice features like 3 range HST and position control... one disappointing spec was loader lift at only 950lbs.

Apart from the additional cost, the larger Kubotas (L2501+) just seemed like overkill. Not sure I really see the need for something larger than the B-series, apart from a better loader. (After reading this thread, clearly most of you would disagree.) One concern is that I need this thing to fit in my garage. Maybe will build a shed or something down the road but garage for now.

So anyway this size seems right. Looking for competitors, I'm thinking the Mahindra Max26XL, Kioti CK2510, and still the LS XJ2025H. All 3 of those have a better loader, all similar sized. Will be looking into these, hopefully visiting more dealers over the next few weeks.

Not to worry. We understand that you are buying your first tractor :) Again, you seem to know what you want. As you keep making trips to dealerships, you will keep learning things. Visit other dealers. It will be both educational and fun!

Mahindra Max26XL, Kioti CK2510, and still the LS XJ2025H are 2 speed Hydro's, Yecch! I just don't like them. Kubota 3 Speed Hydro or go next larger size on another brand for the 3 speed.
If you are mowing a lawn, get either a ZTR mower or a nice lawn tractor to keep hours off the expesive machine. Bet you can find something decent cheap on Craig's list.

For a real tractor, I'd consider one size up from a B series, like asmall L series etc. They are not a big machine. Get a 3 Pt. field mover for the stuff that is not "Lawn"
But to quote another post, you seem to know what you want. As you keep making trips to dealerships, you will keep learning things. Visit other dealers. It will be both educational and fun!
Also get as much seat time as possible.

I'm in mid range in both of my tractors 80% of the time at least. A 2 range hydro seems like it's missing the most important gear.
