Yep. Not that big of a deal. The VM 2.8L in my 2006 Jeep Liberty Diesel had a timing belt. I changed it at the OEM recommended interval of 100K miles and it looked pretty darn good. Only time I have ever heard of the timing belt failing on the VM motor was if someone just procrastinated and let it go too long. Last one I heard about was at 160K miles and it was the original belt. We have come a long ways since the days of the Ford Pinto! You are correct, Scott. VM was a collaborating company with DD, Penske, and GM at different times. They provide motors for a lot of platforms. Many of the same motors that go into the vehicles are also used for inboard marine engines. Strong track record.
Been a staple on Ferrari's for decades. There are advantages, lighter (less moving mass means more HP), quiet, turns higher RPM (more HP), cheaper to produce, doesn't have to use oil from system to lubricate (less weight) no casting to enclose. If changed at proper schedule, its worth the advantages. Oh, by the way chains can part too. . HS

Most Colorado's I see are fleet purchases; auto parts stores, pest control, etc. Local GMC dealer has only gotten about 4 or 5 on the lot all year.

FWIW, everyone's favorite auto buying guide, Consumer Reports, lists the Colorado/Canyon as having 173% more complaints than the average pickup truck.

The same CR that said the VM motor in the Jeep Liberty only got 17 mpg. We regularly got 32+ mpg on road trips, with averages for everything else around 25 mpg. CR has a bunch of dweebs working there. They measured fuel consumption by installing separate fuel source and measuring fuel use. They didn't take into account that the VM diesel common rail system has fuel return to the tank like heavy diesel engines. Tried to explain it to them and they blew me off.

it is interesting eh , that the smaller models are priced almost the same as the bigger ones , I will be in market in next year or two for maybe a small Jeep , (loved my 1993 Cherokee ) but I figured even the smaller new Renegade would do fine ( now that no children) But I noticed that the small Renegade and the bigger Liberty are pretty well priced the same. If the new Canyon had been out when I bought my 2014 Sierra I think I still would of chose the Sierra as cost would be same and fuel mileage diff negligible

So has anyone driven one of these 2.8L GMs yet?

I haven't even seen one on the lot or driving around yet. I've only read about them online and seen a few videos on YouTube.

Well while CR said that the VM diesel in the Liberty only got 17 mpg, EPA estimates were 27. After tuning out the EGR on it, it was not a stretch to get 32+.

My guess is with gas under $2 GM can't give them away. My work looked at them and for nearly the same $$ we got GMC 1/2 tons last December.

If they are selling its probably overseas.
