You can gear reduction a 1HP motor to 1000lb ft of torque . That "must be" better for pulling than the V6 gas engine with only 269lb ft ?

What's to stopping them from both having the same gear reduction?

Them units that allow for various gear ratio's do come in handy. Why the manufacturers might even pick ratio's that complement the engine design!

Good luck with your dog in town. My diesel has all the power I need, 450 rwhp and 1000 ft. Lbs. of torque, it never falls flat.

No power outside of that narrow 1000rpm wide power band. Then it needs to shift . Take the engine to redline and it will fall flat and run out of power.
420HP rear wheels is not stock. Sounds like it was gutless and needed a tuner.

I have taken some very close looks at the new 2.8L Dmax in the Colorado/Canyon platform and it is so strikingly similar to the VM 2.8L diesel that was in my 2006 Jeep Liberty it is hard for all but the most savvy engine person to tell the difference. Same wet sleeved cast iron block with aluminum head with DOHC, same timing belt, same water cooled EGR setup. The only difference seems to be a Honeywell VG turbo instead of a Garrett VG turbo in the VM, a little more rail pressure, a slight change in compression ratio. And of course, the downstream SCR DPF stuff.

GM owned 50% of VM until they sold their share in 2013. The 2.8L Dmax was already in development, and had made its way into some GM vehicles outside the U.S. The 2.8L Dmax is based on the VM 2.8L, which is a solid motor.

Copper - I thought the diesel they put in the Jeep Liberties was a nightmare. Well, to clarify, I was under the impression that they were strong and very efficient, but suffered catastrophic failures and then the parts support was so bad that many people had to scrap relatively new SUVs. My impression could be dead wrong though.

With VM being Fiat/Chrysler maybe the motor is built in house now? Then again, aren't they developing a new automatic transmission with Ford too? So company lines are blurring even with those colossal giants.

I'm very interested in more info on this powerplant.

GM is partnering with Ford on 2 new transmissions (9 speed for FWD, 10 speed for RWD), not Fiat/ChryCo.

GM and Ford have been in bed together for years with six speed automatic FWD and AWD transmissions .

Is that all you have to say? Little do you know about motors anyway.
