Seriously though - regarding PhysAssist's use of plastic wedges:
That reminded me having watched a railway-sleeper cutter working at our farm (some 40 years ago)
picking up a couple of pre-made timber wedges - I don't know what timber they were - from his truck tray and knocking them into place with the back of an axe, in order to free a stuck chainsaw. :thumbsup: I thought that was truly amazing ..... almost as amazing is that I can still remember it!

An old guy where I grew up used to log for a living. He would cut a piece of dogwood about 16 inches long and most evenings he would take a draw knife and make two wedges one on each end. Then he would put them in the oven of the wood cook stove to cure them and then he would cu them apart. He said dogwood was the best wood for gluts. gluts = wooden wedges. Ed

Yes, RR tie is the American term, sleeper is UK- & Aussie-Speak. Nowadays a lot of them are pre-stressed concrete, even though it makes trains noisier, whereas it seems we are now required to be quieter in almost everything we do.
Ed, that is quite likely the best wood for wedges, especially after curing in that manner. Strong, fine-grained and dense timber, used in some wooden golf clubs, was used in tennis racquet frames, also used in knife handles, cutting boards and wood-turning to take advantage of its appearance. I've never heard them referred to as gluts here in Aussie - always thought of an over-supply or surplus of a commodity.

Maybe I'm ahead of the curve (doubtful) but I've used plastic wedges for a long time. Maybe 20 or more years.
You can spend more but I think they are $7 or so and last quite a while.
