That true but you fill the cylinder from the same end whether the cylinder is pointed up or down.

Based on the 2008 link, no one seems to REALLY know. I'm guessing a few cents saving on cost of hoses. It all comes down to money in the end.

I'd like to have more power LIFTING my bucket than powering down. I think most would agree to this.

There is ZERO lifting force when pressure is applied to the rod side, not LESS.

A cylinder will PUSH more than it will PULL, but the PUSH is the same no matter which way the rod is pointed.

Unless you are south of the equator.

True... but force wasn't the basis of the thread, orientation of the cylinder on the loader is/was, until it got side tracked by the issue of force vs direction.

I've been fighting this idea since I was a farm equipment mechanic in the 70's. People confuse the orientation of the cylinder with the different force pulling or pushing.

Rod down keeps the seal cleaner, and may have a benefit in a specific application due to plumbing access or structural interference, but it is NOT placed rod down for more power.
