Could be for property tax reasons. Where I live they will blister you for anything over 10000#.

Or just change out the coolant to ELC.

My dad has 6.0 work trucks in his construction fleet that get yearly coolant changes that have never experienced bad EGR or clogged oil coolers. They have upwards of 300K+ miles on them.

The 6.0 Powerstroke got it's bad rap from something as simple as people never changing their coolant.

We opted to de-rate the new F250 Diesel which is also a F350 no cost option.

Same truck with a lower rating to get under the 10k threshold.

The local Dealer said about half the F250 and 350 Diesels ordered are de-rated to come in just under 10k... helps a lot when set up for towing too...

In a perfect world such games would not be necessary....

There is no derating of F250 or F350 as far as motor or suspension goes. The only trucks Ford derates are chassis cab trucks and that is for duty cycle more than anything else.

When we bought our F350, we were offered an option code for 10,000 GVW. We need the full rated GVW (11,300) so we didn't take it, but that option seemed like "derating" , and correct, there was nothing physically different, and I think the GCWR would stay the same.

We have the de-rate option clearly identified on the window sticker... it applies to the GVW and brings it to 9900 on the F250 and 10,000 on the F350 scroll down the Ford link below and it shows this as an option.

It was a no cost option when we ordered.

There are local freeways with commercial GVW limits and scale requirements... plus Insurance over 10k is more expensive.

I'm still lost. 10K what?

I'm in California and different costs and regs kick in over 10,000 lbs.

The reality is to most law enforcement here is a pickup is a pickup.

My insurance provider mentioned he has to use a different rate schedule if the pickup has a GVW in excess or 10,000 pounds.

The Department of Motor Vehicles charges commercial vehicles based on GVW too... the higher the GVW the more the annual license cost.

Ford Motor Company must believe there are valid reasons or it makes sense to offer the option of a lower GVW door tag that does not exceed 10,000 on the F350 and 9900 on the F250

10,000 lbs. it is the threshold for many things, registration costs, etc. If using the truck for business purposes and crossing state lines and you are over 10k GVWR you need a dot number, log book, Med card, etc. Under 10k you don't.

I guess it's a California thing. My f250 is 10,000 on the door sticker and there was never any mention of wanting it any different.

Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to live in a state where these things aren't fussed over.
