Broken drawbar... chances a 'pro' welder can fix it

/ Broken drawbar... chances a 'pro' welder can fix it #41
My sister in law has a brand new multi process machine for sale. Her husband bought it and died shortly after the purchase. It is a Longevity Plasma, Tig, Stick welder. I cannot remember the model number. But if you are interested I can get the information for you and some photos. I bet it has less than an hour in total on it for all of the processes. He had all of the accessories and supplies for it also. I have no idea why he bought it as his health was very poor when he did so and he never was able to actually use it.

James, send me a PM with the info and I'll spread the word within my gang up here.

Not to sound morbid, but I've saw people with failing health do things like that. It's almost like they want so much to be able to use those things that they start thinking buying them will fix the problem. Watched my terminal neighbor do that this past Summer....

I think you are 100% correct on this Richard. He shook so badly by then that he would not have been able to hold an arc any way. But he spend around $1800 for this welder. I will get the info soon.

New tools are the fountain of youth, an elixir. That said, sometimes only the pro-level eqpt will do!

I've got some years left, happy that I can still work hard. I'm afraid for when that changes, hope I'll be happy, able to relax without a project. :D

I'm trying to stack the deck with clean livin' (for now) trying to teach the kids the same, in such a way they'll want to teach it to their kids too. I think the true fountain of youth is the realization that you got everything done that you needed to do. Maybe the fountain of youth is just that -----> a short list!!

Wish me luck, plz don't support those who will pollute water air or food - thx!

As I continue to draw breath, I pollute the earth. Drives me crazy to think about it. And that's just sitting in my chair using some oxygen and a little electricity.

This may be slightly off topic and more like a what welder to buy thread. The OP said he was in a pre-welder stage but had experience with a buzz box. Welders, like any tool, have a spectrum beginning with cheap junk that even a skilled expert would have trouble using to expensive models that would make a rank beginner look good. Somewhere, fairly early on, is the competent machine that an apprentice can learn on without too much frustration, the journeyman can use well, and the master can make do the seemingly impossible.

With a stick welder such a machine costs a few to some hundreds of dollars.
For MIG, a thousand or two.
For TIG, more like five to several thousand.

I am not familiar with multi purpose welders, but I am enough of a crusty old Yankee to expect that there must be some compromises with a multi-purpose machine. I suggest starting with a name brand, 225 amp stick welder and learning on 6011 rod. (Oh, and buy a 4-1/2 angle grinder and enroll in a night class at a local vo-tech school.)
Back on topic, small quantities of 7018 are available and relatively cheap. With a modicum of experience, some propane, and a sand box one can effect the repair as suggested earlier. If he needs the drawbar urgently, pay to have it repaired.

I find it interesting that someone would buy a high dollar, major manufacturer, multi process welder with features he didnt even know how to use, and then recommend to any one else looking at buying a welder to not spend the money on a quality machine. He has even admitted he would like to have even more features on the machine he did purchase, but dont anybody else buy a quality welder, with lots of features, its a waste of money. It gets really old.

My person thoughts on fixing the broken drawbar is vee out the metal, and cut a piece of round stock to fill the hole and weld it all together using 7018. I got by for many years with a old ac/dc tombstone. I have owned a miller 175 mig for several years and bought a used idealarc, 250/250 ac/dc stick/tig with high freq a few years back. I have more welder than I can use properly, but I am no longer wishing I had bought a bigger, better machine first time instead of waiting to get old before buying what I currently now have.
