Good explanation of what a Sheriff is. I dispatched for 10 years. One night we had a manhunt on for an excaped murderer, roadblocks, all hands on deck type thing. State Patrol called asking who authorized all the call outs of Stape Patrol troops. I told hime "The Sheriff" and patched him through. Nothing more heard. :)

Sheriff can mean a lot of things. The Cook County (Chicago) sheriff's office has almost 7000 officers. Most do useful, often clerical work but can carry guns and make arrests. In the past many were patronage appointments by politicians, essentially "no-show" jobs but they could carry guns. Over the years a number were arrested for felonies and a select group served as "enforcers" for the politicians, pressuring problem citizens.

Be sure to read up on the new rules about transporting deer into Alabama. The wardens have been watching closely and stopping hunters crossing the state line and writing big tickets. I think they enacted the new laws because of the wasting disease that are decimating deer herds in other states. Some guys were bringing back just the cape/horns and got busted recently coming from further north back into Alabama. You should call one of these guys and ask about it. Law Enforcement | Outdoor Alabama.

Wow! I wasn't aware of that, glad I read this.

This is what I got from reading the regulationa dn various articles on it:

"Alabama hunting regulation 220-2-.25, which addresses the importation of game animals, wildlife and furs, was expanded to ban the import of all cervid (deer and other deer-like animals) body parts from states, territories, and foreign countries where Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has been confirmed."

Along with this map:

MAP.JPG

If the map doesn't show, it can be seen here: Alabama Bans Deer Parts from CWD-Affected Areas | Outdoor Alabama

Note that TN is not on the map as having had confirmed sights of CWD, so we're good there. Additonally note that as long as you debone the meat, you're also good. We do that, so we should be covered two ways.

Thanks for posting that info!

And once again this morning I got to watch the +140 yard Walk of Shame as they trudged uphill to their truck before driving away! HaHaHaHaHaHa!!!! Made my day once again!

This time I figure they got in an hour, maybe an hour and a half, of hunting for a three hour drive. The left an hour ago and they're still not home!!!! HaHaHaHa! Warms my heart all over again!!!

Yea you're right: I hate trespassers! Guilty as charged!

Awesome!!! Too bad it wasn't 1400 yards uphill, both ways! I also hate trespassers......

So I've lost track between the two threads....

Were they trespassing on your property or were they trespassing on the neighbor's property or both?

They've trespassed on my property in the past. My neighbor's suspect they've been trespassing on their property as well (their property is closer than mine and much further away from where the owners live).

The last time they trespassed on me was a semi-violent confrontation in my driveway. After that, I implemented an Anti-Trespassng Policy. Basically I inspect my property lines while they are hunting on my neighbor's property (which they have permission to be on). Since my neighbor's property that they hunt is only 115 yards by 145 yards, any property line "inspection" pretty much kills any chance of deer showing up, effectively wasting 3 hours of driving plus whatever time they've spent there before I decided to inspect my property lines.

The fact that they decided that this was their last year here pretty much tells you that without trespassing on the neighboring properties, hunting about 3 acres isn't worth the effort. Good riddance.

A few years back I found a treestand on the northern section of our 70 acres along with a number of cut saplings, etc. I was tempted to remove the stand but I elected to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and left him a note on the stand instead. He called me the same day and as it turns out he is the son of one of my neighbors who I share a portion of my northern border with. He was very apologetic and asked if I minded if he kept the stand there. I had no problem with him asking but I didn't grant permission as I had another friend hunting out that way and figured they'd be a bit too close. Long story short, this guy now keeps a very close eye on our property and gets in touch with me when he or his dad see activity out there. I think being slow to anger can at least occasionally pay dividends. I'm not saying to let people walk all over you but I've found that asking a caught trespasser to just call me to get permission before he wants to be on the property keeps things civil and they never call me anyway. For the most part, this has worked very well in my situation, although there are times when I've had to involve the police.

One hunter give me my name and told me he got permission from me. Where you see owner, I asked.. He made up story. I said to him, I'm the owner and I never talked to you. After getting caught, hunter then said, actually I talked to so & so and he said he was your very good friend. That part was true. I gave him a pass but shouldn't have. As you mention , peace is good..

Cheers........Coffeeman

I thought about this thread during the Christmas break when I had my daughter out hunting with me in my deer blind. We had some odd deer movements that we were trying to figure out when my daughter pointed out about 15 nice turkeys coming our way. It looked like they were going to follow the trail about 20 yards right in front of us. Then she looked at me and asked, "Daddy, do you hear that?" Before the words left her mouth I heard a conversation behind us and stood up to investigate. Two kids, who were walking their dogs, were coming in our direction and scared the turkeys away. My work schedule has been very busy during hunting season and I hadn't much opportunity to hunt with my girls so I was pretty hot. I asked them what the heck they thought they were doing, that they had just messed up our hunt (their approach was perfectly timed to that time of the evening known as, "prime.") and that they needed to get out and not come back. I'm typically not as gruff but they messed up one of the only opportunities I had to hunt with one of my daughters this season and I didn't appreciate them trespassing. When we left we followed their tracks in the snow and they had walked right past my gate with a "no trespassing" sign centered on it. Michigan enhanced our trespassing laws a couple years back and I was seriously considering taking advantage of it.

There are many out there that really don't understand that the signs apply to them. They must think it is only to keep out the "bad guys" or something.

I read a sign on facebook recently that said,

no trespassing,
if you pass this sign,
you are not only a trespasser,
but also a target.

Where can I get one of those signs? :)
