Battery Maintainer - Good/Bad/Ugly?

Smart chargers end up in a maintain mode after filling the battery completely. Once fully charged, good smart chargers can be left connected indefinitely. I have well over $1500.00 worth of lead acid batteries in a variety of applications from twin parallel diesel engine start batteries to the 18 A hr motorcycle battery. The Odyssey PC680 AGM motorcycle battery is going on 8 years, considered well past average life for a BMW boxer battery. The Windstar battery was 15 year old when I replaced it a year ago.

I prefer Schumacher chargers. They have an excellent charging profile for VRLA, AGM, FLA and sealed batteries. The small tenders are unable to rejuvenate an abused battery plus they are pricey. My Schumacher chargers run about $50.00. I have replaced only 1 in the last 7 years. Here's my favorite;

Here in Dixieland, my electricity is cheap compared to many other parts of the country and so, I would not consider solar for battery charging. Also, once the coal miners get back to their jobs, electric power will likely go down in price.

We have been killing off our coal plants a quickly as possible.

Having been to China on several occasions and spent time on the Yangtze River before the dam was completed, the difference between our coal fired power plants and theirs is the quality of the coal and the firing method. BTW, you can almost walk on the Yangtze River. The Chinese use the river as their residential and industrial sewer. Our environments are vastly different and we treat ours much more carefully IMO.

Here in the US, properly mined, washed and pulverized coal is used in much of our power generation. A modern, tangentially fired, coal fueled boiler with appropriate emission controls is actually pretty clean. It will be a long time before wind and solar can fill the gap for power generation. Remember too, most battery technologies have environmental impact, especially the battery you start your car or tractor with, hence the need to care for and extend the life of those lead-acid batteries. A good smart charger can help.

Been to China many times.
That was a reference for my response.
95% of the coal pollution comes from outside the USA.
We need cheap, clean, coal for the health of our economy.
There is NOTHING "political" about that!

I use the Tender Plus for the Case and Yanmar with great results. For some reason, the Tender Plus doesn't like to work well on the wife's 1965 Mustang.

Wind and solar cannot maintain base level power and from what I understand are a complete PITA for nat gas, coal, and nuclear plants to integrate with.

It takes, what about a week to spin up a nuclear plant and two weeks to cool it off? Try integrating that into the varying output of solar and wind.
