I had an '06 Tundra, so not at all the truck you are asking about, but it's still a Tundra. That truck was every bit as reliable as my Honda, and that is saying a lot. Bought it in late '06 as a lease return (17K on it) and sold it with just under 80K on it 3 years ago. I only sold it because we were towing a small (30ft) light 5th wheel and it wasn't enough power. I also knew we were going to upsize the trailer so I ended up with an '06 Duramax.

I never had a single issue with that truck. The little 4.7 was a little under powered, and my best highway mileage was 15-16. I know the 5.7 is a different animal as far as power. but the trucks have been and sounds like they still are very reliable.

Not trying to sideline your thread, but wondering how the Ram 1500 Eco Diesel would compare for YOUR needs? I would tow slightly less than the Tundra, but return much higher mileage, especially empty.

But Tundras are definitely good trucks.

BTW I agree on the electric steering and AFM, I would not like either one.
Thanks for your input.
I dont want a diesel, let alone a Dodge. These new emission diesels are absolute garbage. Tired of fixing stuff on domestics that seem to rarely wear out on Toyotas.

That Ecodiesel seems to have a short life, reports of many losing engines under 100,000 miles with a no chance of support from FC.

Plus, I am fed up with buying stuff that is assembled in Mexico. Toyota supports Canada and USA workers, never pulls the plug on a plant to build in Mexico out of pure greed. Tundra/Tacoma are built in San Antonio Texas, Designed in Michigan with 80% Domestic sourced parts.

Thats huge for me.

The Tundra is the only truck with exception to the F Superduty that offers 4:30 gears, which come with the 5.7. That combo will equal or better my Sierra 1500 4.8 towing capacity.

I took a tour of the Tundra/Tacoma plant in San Antonio and found out that all Tundras are built there, but some of the Tacoma models are built south of the border and all the Tacoma beds are built and painted in Mexico.

Toyota has to build trucks here because of the chicken tax, 25% tariff on all Imported trucks. They use to, pre Tacoma and tundra, build everything in Japan and ship trucks with no bed to the us. They made the beds in long beach CA and assembled here. Got around the chicken tax.

Toyota still makes the land cruiser and 4 runner in Japan at a factory that is hospital clean. It's known in Toyota circles that those models produced in Japan are of Impeccable quality.

I have a Japan built 88 truck and multiple land cruisers, all built to be rebuildable, not consumable.

I thought the F150 had EPS? Thats how the rear trailer assiat works, no? The 5.0 is solid, but all of our Ford dealers suck. The local Toyota dealer is excellent.

I think some early models of the 5.0 had the option of regular power steering but the new ones are all EPS. I wouldn't be afraid of EPS. I have a 2011 F150 ecoboost with EPS with 123k and still driving 60-100 miles a day. Need to replace a wheel bearing soon but other than that it's been a great truck. Tons and tons of power. Fuel economy is pretty good unloaded, drops to low teens under a decent trailer load but pulls like a freight train. It runs like a little diesel and the power curve is great for daily driving. The 5.0 is a good motor too, my father drives one and is very happy with it. I'd look into a Ford and drive a little farther for a better dealer. You'll get better fuel mileage and more power and a higher towing capacity. Tundras are outdated to me, and the capacities leave a lot to be desired, plus the price on the tundras is pretty high considering your getting old technology that doesn't compete with the leading trucks.

Thats great to hear that their attention to QA is second to none.

What really impressed me is I looked at a 2012 Tundra recently and the chassis is cleaner (slmost 100% rust free) than my 2011 Sierra which has been Rust proofed every year since I have had it.

Old but proven technology. Toyota does not push things to the market until its 100% proven, unlike GM, Ford and Dodge.

I do not want an ecoboost, no interest in them, V8 only. Ecoboosts have not proven durable as of yet.

The capacity of the Tundra is all I need, if I need more I will buy a 2500HD gasser.

I loathe the way the domestics sell their trucks, 57,000 options and you need to get certain options to get certain things.

With Toyota it is much simpler, aside from seating they pretty well come with the same options.

Not sure what technology you think Ford has, I can assure you Toyota is not behind Ford, no 3.5 direct injection V6 turbo will replace a V8. My all AL 5.7 DOHC 4 V chain driven, direct injection, VVT, V8 is not old technology, it's one on the best V8's ever made by any manufacture, ever, maybe the best, you can make a case for MB's V8's.

And the 381HP/401 Torque makes the 5.7 no slouch either.

Can believe the new Ford expedition only comes with the 3.5l V6, and the ad shows it towing a 25' Airstream travel trailer. That's crazy. I wouldn't tow a tent trailer with that engine.
