Just curious why you would take the time to make a gasket vs useing rtv silicone ....

I wasn't sure if the surfaces were true. The original design engineer went with gaskets, and I figured he knew better than I. That was my thought process there.

I go with gaskets myself, even if I have to make them as you did. My concern being that the gasket thickness is typically part of the fitting tolerance. I know I always included it in my designs.
If the tolerances seem to allow for it, sometimes I paint a very, very thin layer of silicone sealer on both sides of the gasket and hang it up to dry. I won't install it until the sealer has set up.

Off subject, but wondering when you (rScotty) are going to show us some pictures of your 165D?

Exactly as I would do it. BTDT many, many times before.
And the English In-Out gives me the indication that someone may been inside that unit before.

"IN" and "OUT" are in English?

Yep!
No English anywhere, no manuals available in English, but here on this valve we have "In" and "Out".... What gives??

Winston, glad you asked. In fact, I was sort of wondering when I was going to get back on that project myself.... And I'm hearing grumbles of the same from my wife since she noticed the YM165D is taking up prized space between the house and workshop.

Eventually I'll get some pictures together this week and start a YM165D restoration thread so we can all kibitz on what needs to happen ...
I'll name the thread something like: YM165D Restoration.

It will be a lot of rebuild. The 165 was at a neighbors house and it (along with his house) traveled half a mile downstream tumbling end over end in a rocky river during a flood. It may need a donar tractor. Actual wrench work is going to be a warm weather job; no heated space yet for tractor sized projects.

It's a nice mystery. Maybe it's just that English is the universal technical language??
I've don't see any references to preferred or standard language in my old design books, but did run across one sentence claiming that engineering drawing was being taught in English at Indian and Chinese tech schools as a way to help students there gain language proficiency.

Noticed you 'tap tap' lightly to make out the gasket contours.
Do U also use big bearing balls to tap cut the stud holes? (an old trick I learned from an older mechanic)
I keep an assortment (like 1/2" and 3/4" in my tool box) otherwise use the ball end of a ball peen hammer.

Nice work and more than I'd like to take on these days.
