First day of the rest of my life

In the beginning my wife would ask me each morning what my plan was for the day. Well gee,,, I thought retirement meant I didn't need a plan.... So I'd make up something, "Oh I'm going to brush cut at the farm today". That evening she would ask how the brush cutting went? I'd have to admit that I didn't get around to that..... Finally she understood and quit asking. Now in the evenings she might ask what I did each day, or more likely she'll say "What was your human contact today"? A wonderful retirement day is when I can say none. That freaks her out just a little. She thinks I might be a bit anti-social. I think it's more that I like myself and don't need any more than that thru the day!!!!

Wifey say's I'm anti social, I tell her it isn't true. I used to be a people person, but people ruined that for me ! Now I'm a dog guy... everybody's happy...

The beauty of Alaska hasn't changed, still the most beautiful place imaginable. Society has changed, and not for the better. There are still good folks but the gypsies, tramps and thieves are taking over. Everyone blames it on the "opioid crisis" but I think it started long before.

Welcome to the retired guys club. It can take some folks awhile to adjust to it, I think it took me about a day.
Enjoy that first cup of the hot beverage of your choice when you get up on that first day, it will probably taste better than it has for a long time!

'oosik' retired and moved from Anchorage to WA. I was complementing him for getting out in time, before Anchorage became so crime ridden. I live 166 miles from there and haven't been back in probably 15 years. Not worth the stress.

We ran into that issue all the time. Training on the board was 8 weeks. But having major problems like steam failure, power failure, screens going black, SRU tripping things like that may not happen for a year or two. But you are trained and better know what to do.

This is so true. When I was a steam plant operator and spent two years as the floor operator of the unit. I experienced close to ten power outages, full plant trips etc. The one girl that was my cross shift spent the exact same two years operating the same steam plant. She never even experienced a single boiler trip, other then planned shutdowns for planned maintenance. Sometimes it is just how the schedule and the weather falls.

I've spent time in all the cities in SE Alaska and if its sunny and warm - one of the most beautiful places in the world. All the way from Ketchikan to Haines & Skagway.

I have been fishing twice to a Alaska; Sitka and Kenai. Both are beautiful places.

I almost moved there about 18 years ago when I worked for BP. I think financially it worked out better to stay here but it would have been a nice adventure.

My friend semi retired at 55...

One of the treasures of his retirement has been the annual Alaska fly in to some remote lake camp...

He did it once while working and it didn't go over well with the wife... she said separate vacations made her feel like a widow.

Now that he is retired she looks forward to his 10 days in Alaska... they have more time together and it is something he loves and her brother is one of the guys that goes.

Guess that is the idea of retirement anyway... having time to do things you really never had time for before?

They did take a cruise to Alaska... his wife wanted to see it and enjoyed the ship... but she was never one to camp or rough it.
