First day of the rest of my life

In all the years(1960-1982) in AK - I flew into a fishing camp once - Lk Iliamna. Caught so many salmon on that one day trip - almost hurt myself. I usually went north and fished a couple rivers in the Talkeetna area. Or down to Homer for halibut, crab & shrimp.

I've spent time in all the cities in SE Alaska and if its sunny and warm - one of the most beautiful places in the world. All the way from Ketchikan to Haines & Skagway.

When i was a youngster, most of the time i spent up there was in the bush or out on the islands. One time in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Kodiak. The flight from Fairbanks was very memorable for a couple reasons, in that as a young single guy, i had the pleasure of sitting by a pretty blonde girl. Turned out she was from Sweden and raced dogs and it seems she was responsible for the horrendous smell consisting on rotting fish and dog poo. Her dogs were on board, behind a bulkhead at the rear of the plane, and as time went on, it became more and more fragrant.

That's what I've heard from a couple friends up there - Doofy. One worked with me in the Health Dept and the other was Chief of Police in Anchorage.

Jesus - I came to Alaska in 1960 - about the same time as you did, Doofy. I remember the good old days in Alaska and I dam near weep. Such a fantastic place - and now its just like any other city that size.

I was in Anchorage February 1984 on business. Rented a car. Driving in city traffic when everybody stopped moving for no apparent reason. Sat still for maybe 2 minutes. Longer than a traffic light. Then started moving again. Got down the street a couple blocks and there was a Bull Moose standing on the sidewalk. Guess he must have crossed the street leisurely!!!! :D

Almost a 100 posts without a negative...

Maybe sooner IS better than later when it comes to retirement?

A lot of my parents friends retired early... not by choice but through downsizing, plant closures, forced buyouts... etc.

Some did well but most not so good... they thought that 250k nest egg and were just hanging on to 65 to have some breathing room... and yes, one took a job as a Walmart Greeter.

Maybe it comes down to leaving on your own terms?

The only people I would ever suggest continue working is those whose life is their job and retirement would be sitting in the recliner watching TV. They should work until they die.

Happened to a friend of my parents... retired plant manager... it was his life... the plant closed and he was old enough to retire without financial worries... moved from California to be near his wife's retired family in Florida... the leisure life became one cocktail party to the next... starting about 11 am each day... he loved golf but it was about drinking in Fort Myers in his retired circle.

He realized he was going down hill fast... the local market had a help wanted sign for months... manager said the kids today only work until they earn enough for a car, concert tickets... etc.

Clyde said he was interested... a 60 year old asking a 42 year old for a job as a stock boy... Clyde convinced the manager to give him a try... Clyde had a new purpose... he was eager to go to work... the manager thought Clyde was after his job... Clyde said been there and done that... had 600 reporting to him before he retired.

Anyway, Clyde became the best employee... respected by employees and loved by customers... even best man for one of the kids weddings...

Never know where life takes you but sitting on the couch is a slow death for sure.

As has been stated, sitting on your butt on the couch will kill you. It probably doesn't matter much what you do in retirement as long as you are up and doing something(endless cocktails don't count).

I am guilty. Stove-up all the time, painful toes and feet and a catch in my back just keeps me down and lazy. If I don't change my ways, and soon, I won't be able to enjoy anything but the glory of Heaven. Worked to hard for to long to waste retirement.
