Been to few retirement parties but it has been quite some time... one of our nurses had a very nice retirement party and then came back to work 6 months later... she said for her sanity as both her husband and her retired the same month!
I lost the max 480 hours of sick leave when ownership changed hands... under the new owners sick leave doesn't carry over and employees are expected to file for State Disability if they are out for anything but a short time.
A lot of the tenured managers saw this coming and used every day of leave, sick leave, educational training and on the day they were to come back called in to say they are retiring... maybe they were being smart but struck me as strange saying you are coming back and then not show up on the day your are to report... none had any retirement festivities... none packed their offices... I boxed it all.
Back in the 80's I really did attend some nice parties... everyone left feeling good plus it was a morale booster for the rank and file.
In 2012 our CEO agreed to a low key affair on site... it was nice and covered the lunch breaks so staff could say good byes... I had a mayor issue a proclamation noting the hospital had completed 100,000 surgery cases under the retiring CEOs leadership... it was simple but well received...
