Ouch! You did the right thing, pulling the pistons.

I wonder if it was cranked with water in the cylinders to bust up stuff like that.

My guess is, at some point in time it was. If you look back on page 11 you will see the pictures I posted last night.

It appears to, I will try honing first, if it’s not enough then it will have to come all the way out and apart and go get re-sleeved. I was really hoping to be able to do an “in frame” rebuild, but we will see.

What’s the best method to getting them out? I’ve done several gas engines and my old Cummins, but none have had sleeves.

never taken any out myself, but I have read in the past where someone has removed them.
If I'm not mistaken, there is a tool that is used to remove them.
Perhaps hoye has such a tool

Yes YM2000 has sleeves/liners.

Note in the diagram, the crankshaft slides out the back of the block so replacing main bearings isn't trivial.

A buddy of mine is a certified diesel tech up at the semi dealership here in town. I’ll be borrowing his hone anyway, I’m sure he can help remove the sleeves if we decide they need to be replaced.

Thats what I did.

Used Thread all and machined a stout plastic insert that self centered under the liner .
The only critical part was making the liner insert big enough to catch the edge of the liner but not the parent block material.

Really would be helpful to measure the ID of the liners - the picture may be exaggerating it but there sure seems to be a lot of wear at the top .

definitely need a ridge reamer before honing if that is the direction you decide to go.

Not that it makes any difference but I would suspect starting fluid caused a good bit of your catastrophe.

Not good, good thing you pulled those piston. If had just slapped it back together, you'd be pulling it back down, wasted time and money. Probably wouldn't hurt to inspect the main bearings.

I think this is the thread we referred to the old Domush thread where he rebuilt an abused 336 the shade tree way and inframe like this. If we have not i just referenced it. He pulled his liners in the engine and made some sort or puller and went into detail about its construction and use.

The top is mostly carbon and oil build up, not so much wear. There is wear however down towards the bottom and middle of the bore, mainly where you can see that it looks like the piston got stuck.

As far as starting fluid being a possible cause, could be, I never used any, but the PO might have, who knows. I am going to guess that he isn’t the one who did the fancy head gasket work though.

I’ve looked up mostly everything I need, if I don’t do new injectors or sleeves, I’m at about $600. That’s including a new air filter, coolant hoses, etc.

Seeing what the injectors cost i would use what you have. But if you want take them to your buddy and get the new nozzels and rebuild them.

Well it was suggested by someone up the post to just put a head gasket on and slap it to gather and run it, See post 107 &109.
