Sigrams From a very expensive experience you are correct.
We live in a rural area. Started to have cattle going through fences and staying in the corral . and one morning had loaded trailer behind tractor with fence material . and saw a yearling calf dead and mutilid with 2 reddish boxer dogs gut full leaving the calif . called owner about this and explained had never seen these doge before.
When he arrived .sat in his pickup explained never had seen these dogs before. and he remembered 2 new dogs at a location 1/2 mile from our place. rode with him and said yes they were the dogs. He went to door and lady said they were not her dogs but had been left by some one picked up for drugs and was in jail.
The calf owner shot at the male dog which left the area with the female. I never left the pickup.
He was charged with enough charges only a lawyer could explain. the trail and fines came to 650 dollar for shooting at a dog and his lawyer charged about the same fee.
I was charges with accessory by pointing out had seen the same dogs leaving the dead calf. it cost me trial and legal fees for lawyer.
even though was not charged by Judge of committing any wrong. the atty. wanted me to take anger management classes.
All this only to say any dog that comes on this place gets a pan of water and if hungry a meal. if has a collar with phone call will call to let owner where the dog is.
People who say there is a stand your ground law are fooling them selves into a legal wrangle only the legal system benefits

I'm not a criminal lawyer, but there is something very strange going on here. Guy who did the shooting must have been on someone else's property, someone (who?) had to report and testify against him...and I'm wondering what he was charged with? Shooting at a feral, stock killing dog in the country? That's illegal? Did the owner step up? Lots of questions.
