I grew up on a place just like that except our acreage was a little larger. Dad always let the dogs run and it was never an issue, they stayed on the property. New dogs over the years would kill a chicken or two before they were trained, one time three pigs.... but there was one dog we had (Sheppard/Great Dane mix) that strayed way, way beyond what we ever dreamed down an irrigation ditch to chase neighbors cattle. We found him shot dead and dragged to the edge of our property. I keep my dogs contained at all times unless I am with them.
