I bet stuff has to get to market quicker than would allow for long term in-field testing. But, I bet if you pay top dollar, you might get better stuff.

Probably not, we had a bunch of outdoor LEDs replaced in a project with the local utility (they had a rebate that paid for part of it), 40-50% of them had the drivers fail within a year.

So it sounds like a lot of people are getting screwed with LEDs.

With me, it's always worse, as I don't use anything very much and am always outside of the warranty time frame.

Well if I live long enough....I'll find out if I get screwed. Actually I think the process of us all getting screwed started when we all could no longer buy a quality regular old light bulb.

I could say that government and utility contracts don't always get the highest quality stuff, but .....

Every now and then I get these calls from a super friendly guy that wants to talk to the person in charge of buying florescent tubes. He wants to know "what I drink". I buy over priced bulbs (with someone elses money)from him and get a bottle to call my own! What a racket!

In regards to China made quality issues. I don't blame China. I blame the American Corporations that lower the specs to increase profits.

We had a maintenance man get fired for buying some of those bulbs.

Once we got through the initial bad quality, they have been fine, but they were probably from the low bidder...

Sodium vapor lights are okay for outside but I've worked in too many shops that tried to use them for shop lighting and so developed a hatred of them...

Mercury vapor lights have a better color, but long fluorescent tubes are my hands-down favorite for shop light.
