Pressure treated for a 8x12 deck is going to cost close to $200 for the decking. Depending on the prices in his area going with Ipe (the most expensive of the hardwood decking) will add about $500. If trying to do this to a budget then PT is your best option. But if composite decking is an option then the price difference isn't that great. In fact Cumaru and Tigerwood can be bought for about the same price as composite decking. They just aren't stocked by as many lumber yards.

I don't know about by you but buy me plastic crap $ 5.75,sapielie mahogany $5.45, Ipe $6.25 per ft. Pressure treated is cheap the first time but when have to replace it every 5 years it gets expersive. They call any south American hardwood sapielie mahongany by me . Might be a mixed batch of Cumaru ,Tiger wood etc. The way pt decking shrinks cracks twists rots and looks after a couple of years. I consider it temporary prouduct. I didn't think an extra $200 bucks would kill anybody pretty far from a million dollar yacht.:drink:

Appreciate all the information, but I'll be sticking with pressure treated for this project. It's the best "value" for what I'm doing. As mentioned earlier, the PT deck on the back of my house is 25 years old, still solid & looks great. I don't mind a little maintenance every couple years.

But old pressure treated wood is not modern pressure treated wood. The treatment changed.

My wood flooring did not hold up well at all, even cypress. Went to t&g composites and much happier. One has been on 20 years and still like new. The wood sometimes did not last 7. It costs more initially but I did not have to replace it regularly. Much cheaper for me in the long run but if your old deck lasted that long you may well be OK.

Air circulation is the key with pressure treated wood. The more you have the longer it will last.

The composite for my Deck is rated for water immersion for docks... only time will tell if it is really that good in Washington State...

I have not seen the finished product so this was the job done on faith!!!

But with rent paying tenants I can't just Caution Tape and call it a day.

Western Washington = wet for 9 months, then dry for 3 months. :(

Yep... pretty much especially around Olympia but the summers are glorious... truly.

I actually do better in a climate with clean air... the precipitation seems to be a benefit... but the summers also seem to be getting warmer and dryer...

Still remember the 30 days of rain followed by gale force winds... the power was out for week and many roads impassible due to falling limbs and toppled trees... pretty intense combination.

This will be a good test to see how the new stuff holds up, compared to the old stuff.
