1800 RPM Diesel is what you want. 3600 RPM generators are consumer junk, Ok for little use but will burn out fast..

If money were no object then definitely the Honda. But I'm cheap and would probably do a Harbor Freight Model. I believe their biggest is 9000 watt MAX though. Which in an emergency, will run just about anything you need to survive. Propane generators really go through the propane, gas or diesel would be my choice. But I'm 10 minutes away from a gas station also.

" But I'm 10 minutes away from a gas station also"

That's good!

Does your 10 minute away gas station have an independent (gas pump) electric source?

I have several gas stations within 10 minutes. If they are all without power I will just have to drive 20 minutes into the next large city. Not sure any of them have generators. Our power goes out rarely, but it's till a pain fighting the portable generator. Hauling it from the detached garage to the lower patio at the house. But still glad I have it and it has never failed to run. It will run all night on a tank of gas. Bought it at Sam's Club on sale for $200. It's a 4000 watt Max, 3750 running I believe.

I thought a back up generator would be a good idea so in 2002 I bought a new Honda generator.
It's been sitting in my garage ever since, never used, never had gas in it.
Not one of my better ideas.:confused3:

I bought a used 10KW MIL Diesel generator a little over 2 years ago. Figured we would never again have an outage. WRONG! I have over 60 hours on it. I can tell you it's nice when power goes out for days at a time to sit in my all electric house with the AC and TV on.

Diesel is my choice. The price listed on this Kubota is about what you would pay for a similar surplus diesel generator these days so it looks like a great value to me. Being the cheapskate I am I would build my own enclosure and store fuel in 55 gallon drums.

Thanks for all comments. I sent a note to the Maine generator place to see about shipping. It is about as far from the Mendocino coast as you can get without jumping into the Atlantic Ocean so probably too costly.

Look at the Perkins 10kw as well... Hardy is more but you get a controller, maybe you could order a bare bones unit. Or see if they can build the Kubota like Main offers..
