Question for electricians

   / Question for electricians #51
My 22kw generac has less than 5% THD. Nothing flickers, and 5 ups devices never have had any issues. Inverter generators usually have the best quality of output, but ate usually on the smaller KW output. Your not going to find a 22 kw inverter init.

I need a large one due to cold winter power outages. Have to provide power for heaters on watertroughs for animals, sump pumps, heat tape on roof, things like that. Did the load calcs and i just want everything to work. Im not having wife have to mess with flipping breakers.

Plus…. I got it for free.

I think I'm going with this and will monitor home if on power or generator(14KW). I have auto ATS. Neighbor only has his on 8K gen to monitor some circuits connected to manual transfer such as heat, frig, well, heat. WiFi connect with phone app.

I have no idea what the THD of my 1990 Honda EM5000 is…

If it's anything like my Honda EM6500-SX, I suspect your electronics run on it just fine.

@grsthegreat - are you aware of any non-inverter portable generators that are still made that have decent power quality (good enough to run electronic heating system controls, computer, router, etc)? I have not looked in some time, but it seems fewer manufacturers are publishing this information these days. It seems portable generators with relatively clean power are a lot less common these days than they used to be.

My 7 kW Honda-powered Powerstroke always worked fine with the UPS's, but the AVR got damaged in the last storm, so I had to temporarily substitute a new generator from Firman. Despite being similar size and operating under similar loading, the Firman drove the UPS's nuts.

I have a new regulator on the shelf for the Powerstroke now, in fact I ordered two to have a spare, but it's not the OEM part. I'm anxious to see how it behaves, but haven't had a chance to install/test this week.

I will admit that the features on the Firman are nice, particularly the dual-fuel kit from the factory. But the thing is so obnoxiously loud that I hope to never have to use it again. I'll probably keep it as a spare for the Powerstroke, only until I get a permanent genny installed, and then sell both of them.

No, and ive looked. Some of the portable units have 24% THD. Its crazy insane. Wont hurt a portable drill or saw, but electronice wont like it.

Neighbor has a nice champion tri fuel generator. Works great, but his led lights hate it. Flicker like crazy.

None of our computers or anything else had a problem running on our Honda EM5000 in the 25 years we used it (during outages, which are frequent here). We replaced it with another Honda.

I have a Champion open frame inverter genny with less than 3% THD. It runs electronics without a hiccup, which is why I bought an inverter in the first place. Its rated at 8750/7000 W, gasoline only. I initially wanted tri-fuel, but at the time I bought, this was the only low THD generator with enough power that I could find at a reasonable price. Gas only has worked out fine for me, as I do not have natural gas, and if run on propane, it should have its own tank to avoid running the house out of fuel, or being out of fuel when you need it most. I used 100 ULL avgas in it, as that stores well and doesn't kill the carb with ethanol. Now the Nazifornia gummint says I can't but that do to the lead in it, a very small amount but enough to dash our governor's fantasy of a perfect world.
We have solar with backup batteries now, so don't need the genny for most outages now. It can plug into our system to provide power/charge batteries if needed so I'm hanging on to it.
