So, you had the two aluminum wheels just lying around? What were they in their previous life. I want to build a 2x72 for shop work and knifemaking. Wheels are expensive!

The large wheel came from a junk shop for $2.00 but it had a U shaped one inch thick rubber glued on that I had a **** of time trying to get off, finally used a band saw to cut it off, then made a shaft on the lathe and turned the rest off. For the smaller pulley I used a hole saw on a piece of two inch aluminum plate and finished on the lathe.

Nice job on the grinder.

I have to make one one these once I get caught up on projects.

I have been looking for something like that, but mostly I find junky consumer offerings or really expensive industrial ones.

I started with the 1x30 HF grinder then got a 1x42 1/2 hp grinder. The 1x42 grinder is 10 times better than the 1x30 HF grinder. After watching Mr Pete 222 build a Kalamazoo style 2x48 belt grinder I built my 2x48 1 hp grinder. 10 times better than the 1x42 grinder. I had a 1 hp motor from a Craftsman table saw and most of the metal for the build. Purchased the wheels and a piece of DOM. I have a little over $100.00 in the build. With the 2x48 belt grinder it will help with a build of a 2x72 belt grinder using plans from Jeremy Schmidt (check out his build on UTUBE).

If you have a bench grinder look at the multitool grinder attachment 2x36 @ $215.95 or 2x48 @ $349.00.

or

Kalamazoo 1x42 1/3 hp $330.00

Kalamazoo 2x48 1/2 hp $509.00

Just wondering if anybody has tried to smelt old aluminum metal to cast the big aluminum pullies. It is something I have thought about, but been afraid to try. I have a buddy that cast small aluminum parts. He uses old transmission cases or other busted parts and melts them in a homemade forge. He then uses some sort of green sand to make his molds.

Look on YouTube for a man called mrpete222. He recently made a video about fixing up a belt sander. And he has many videos of casting parts from aluminum, including wheels for a belt sander.
