YM240D developed clunking at rear wheel

Yeah that gear is toast.

I don't remember busted Bull gears either?? That would mean there should be lots to be had. Not sure if Hoye would tear down a trans though? They may prefer to sell the whole rear unit as a whole? But usually things are worth more as parts than a whole...but it may take 29 years to sell each part? But usually a few parts sold would add up to the unit price?

Good luck looking for the gear too.

So I've already tracked down the parts. $250 for both gears, plus shipping. Does anybody know if the smaller gear (sorry I lack it's mechanical name) that turns the bull gear, if it gets remove through the brake housing or through the gearbox?

I can positively tell you just pulling the brake cover won't let it come out, not sure if you take the whole assembly off? Let me try to remember to look through my service manual later and see if I can see .

I believe the differential carrier (behind the brake housing) will have to be removed. Has your pinion been damaged?

That's what I feared! I've never done any of this before and it seems daunting for some reason. The pinion gear has some pitting and wear, but nothing near as major as the bull gear. No missing teeth or huge chunk missing. I'm planning to swap it out to match the new donor bull gear.

That would be your call, however, I don't believe those come as a set like the ring gear and pinion set.

Yeah I'd leave it if all it has is pitting. These are not high speed gears or anything that would whine and annoy you like in a daily driver if a gear like that was left.

Its a lot easier to see the pinion gear than it is to snap a photo. Once I get into it a little more, then I'll determine if I want to swap it. I think the price of $250 quoted for the bull gear was including the matching pinion gear. If that's the case, I will at least have a spare or one to swap out if I feel its necessary.

Another vote for leaving the little gear as-is. If it survived those gear fragments getting jammed it will hopefully continue to serve ok. BTW the little gear that drives the bull gear is different from the ring & pinion gears, not related.

Leaving that little gear in place might avoid massive teardown - anyone know?

No doubt much simpler, one side of the brake housing and differential carrier will have t be removed to change the small one. Changing large gear would only require axle housing removal with axle intact.
