The trick to buying a ballast box is to buy one shaped like another implement. Like a box blade, or a rear blade, or heck even a brush hog.

Why someone would spend actual money to buy a steel box you can throw weight in, just to have weight on the back of their tractor, is beyond me. Seems like a waste of money. Buy a heavy box blade. At least you'll have something useful hanging on to the back of your tractor.

I can answer that one as I did just that to get rid of something shaped like a implement.

I needed something that I could work thru tight narrow trees with when I used my grapple. BB was too wide. Tiller I wasnt going to risk accidentally damaging. and the rotary cutter was too long. So. I spent $225 on a used kubota weight box and filled it with gravel to the tune of about 1100 lbs. Its very short and compact, I dont hang it on trees and it just works great.
Somewhere working out in the open it loses its advantages but id run circles around you and your BB in the trees and tight trails.

I don't have trees or tight trails.

Neither does the OP, from what he's described.

So, dissimilar things are dissimilar.

I actually DO have trees, lots of them, in addition to what else I described. They seem to be more of an issue for fitting between them, due to the width of the loader bucket. But they can make turning around harder, or moving around the periphery of a pile that has spread out (the most recent challenging circumstance). Taking multiple bites out of a pile from different angles gets a lot harder with trees everyplace. I've only hung something up on them a couple times, slowly, and generally that was the landscape rake which is my widest rear implement. But all that maneuvering is a lot of finicky work.

You asked why someone would. Not why someone with your place would. I explained it to you.

To the OP. it makes a world of difference when you have limited room. Mine is basically 24x24 and 24 , maybe 30 deep.

Yup.

Giving out complete information is the best way to get good advice. (Not)

Withholding important information leads to poor advice.

By all means OP, continue to withhold important information when seeking advice.

That's always super helpful.

Probably should have opened with that little tidbit.

Making assumptions and speaking for someone else without knowing all the facts is not a good idea either.

That just leads to confusion.

What's the problem? I said I was dealing with close quarters. See post 11. My original post wasn't about whether I should get a ballast box, it was about branding and shipping. Where do you think I was witholding important information?

"Buy a heavy box blade."
Or .... fill a 55 gallon drum with concrete.

I'm building a ballast box as we speak because I am using my bucket and grapple in tight spaces. I can't keep looking behind me all the time to see if I have clearance.
Also dealing with quite a hill so going with 1200 lbs.

I purchased the john deere ballast bix with height extension kit for my kioti. But since i could not take the greeN box...i took it to my buddys powder coat shop and sand blasted it and colored it kioti orange.

Filled it with concrete and i have a 1,000 pound ballagt. Have had it for close to 8 years now. Very handy and never gets in the way working close quarters.

If a 3pt QH compatible ballast will fit a standard 3pt, why the **** make both?

My TITAN ballast did not fit my QH. Top link pin was behind lower pins (needed moved forward) and was too high. Moving top hook for different implements almost negates using a QH. I lack welding skills but can bolt almost any thing together. See attached photos for my top link mod.

Your mod for top hook looks good and obviously works I recently purchased a Bush Hog fertilizer spreader in order to use it on my QH you use a similar bracket for top hook but ended up not using QH because lever for opening gates on spreader hits top of QH so just mount on 3pt it痴 easy to move around. On Titian Cat 2 ballast box I put lift pins pointing inwards and as I mentioned little grinding on top edge of box where lift hook comes under to hook pin.
