Rounded off drain plug

Looks like there may be enough room in the pan boss to just drill and tap a new hole...

But I would probably first try welding a wrench onto the stub that's left. Worst that can happen is that you twist it off.

Then you have two choices:

A) drill out the existing plug and hope you get your drill centered (and parallel).
B) drill and tap a new hole.

BTW, why do you need to remove the plug? Is it possible to use a pump to drain from the top?

Really, just find the closet 6 point socket, grind the plug till it starts on, hammer home and remove. 20 minutes work

Probably would be a good idea to use an impact socket. Brute force may break a standard socket. Lo and behold; after driving the socket on , the plug comes out only finger tight. Never under rate brute force. As my Dad used to say " if it don't go get a bigger hammer".

the plug is 4 point, like the back end of a socket. it's MUCH harder to grind a 6 point by hand than it is to make a 4 point!.. I'd just put a good pipe wrench on the threads of the plug, and un-thread it!. and ALWAYS use a 4 point socket or wrench on the new plug!..

Don't tempt me. Weather kept us out over Easter, weather still isn't cooperating. Ordered a pair of knipex to try out. They're scheduled for delivery on the 7th.

I suspect that plug is well beyond the capabilities of the Knipex.
It will not be possible to get enough leverage with the Knipex.
You will love the Knipex for many other uses though.

Put the Knipex on the plug adjusted for a good fit, squeeze, and slide a three foot long piece of thick wall small diameter tubing over the top handle to pull on.

If it can support a man standing on the top handle, it can take a torque multiplier pipe :thumbsup:.

there's no way possible that the Knipex channel lock pliers could possibly outperform a pipe wrench!..
