Gas station’s diesel pump nozzle too big?

Someone once told me, that when filling locomotives, they would remove the nozzle from one full tank, place it on the ground, with fuel still pouring out and move the loco, or some such thing. Times were different then. Or maybe it was a time when they were trying to skew the efficiency numbers of Diesel over Steam.

Yep, the diesel pumps at my local petrol stations have this 'speed' button/function... that, and the diesel nozzle is larger in circumference so that it shouldn't be able to go into a vehicle petrol tank.

On a reverse note, I was in the local convenience store a few years ago when a woman had just filled her diesel Mercedes with 87 octane gas. The clerk's BF is a diesel mechanic and told her to dump a quart of oil in it and drive it 20+ miles to his shop so that he could change the fuel.

I remember when I figured out there was a 'truck' nozzle and a 'car' nozzle...

and I carry some gel dip gloves in the side pocket of my driver's door of my diesel pickup for the often messy diesel pump handles. I hate eating lunch with diesel on my hands.

Got to thinking about it a bit more: “Why would store do that? They’re typically a good local business, have hundreds of locations so very experienced and thought out.” So I go back for trip #3.
Like I suspected (eventually!), they do have smaller nozzle lower pressure diesel at one of the three gas islands. I was just conditioned to the kerosene pump being off by itself, then when they added diesel there I didn’t think to inspect the gas islands to see if one of those pumps offered it too.

If you get rid of the EPA nozzle on that can and put a high flow nozzle on it with a vent then it helps. My fuelling station has one of each nozzle and one time I got stuck using the big nozzle. It doesn't fit into the can but if you can vent the can by opening the old style vent then at least you don't get fuel spraying out from the air trying to escape.

As far as speed, the pump at the place I go to seems fast regardless of which nozzle I use. When I use the correct smaller nozzle in my 5 gallon cans I can almost fill them very quickly, like I can get about 4 gallons into them in about 10 seconds but then I have to wait for the foam to dissipate before I can get the last gallon in.

What he痴 saying is the diesel nozzle barely fits in the neck opening of that fuel can. Those Midwest cans also have a **** baffle inside that won稚 allow you to BLAST fuel in them.
I looked at one today and was wondering if you could remove the plastic baffle THANG.

I ordered one of these fill adapters 00072709 that are made for TDI VW cars. People use them to use the big truck nozzles in their smaller openings.

I just received the fill adapter but have not used it yet. The part that the station's nozzle fits in is 1-5/8" ID. The DIA for the part that fits in your can is 1" and necks up to 1-1/4".

How cool would it be if a jerry can would have a pump using your tool batteries?

As it is, my Ridged 18V stuff, has hardly any neat stuff.

I guess, for Gasoline, it would all have to be explosion proof. And how could you limit it to diesel?

It doesn't say for diesel but is OK for heating oil, and allegedly delivers 550-650 gallon per hour of unfiltered liquid.
I've used something similar to backfeed RV antifreeze into the plumbing of a camp to winterize, and it did a pretty good job.
