I have a buddy with a HD4272 hydraulic box blade he wants to sell me. It's in like new condition. I'm assuming these are the king daddy of box blades. Anything to look out for?

1140 pounds, cat 1/2, 40-80 hp tractors according to Woods.

Thanks

Yes, in my opinion at least. I have a Land Pride HR3584 and it's very similar. We have a Woods rotary cutter and it has held up well.

May I ask what tractor you pull it with?

You're right about the quality, but you may find out what "tail wagging the dog" means - I have an original Gannon (actually MADE by gannon) 80", run it on the back of my (NOT compact) Allis 160 - the Allis weighs literally a TON more than your Kioti (if that's what your intention is) - I have just under 600 pounds of front weights on the Allis, and there are times when the front wheels STILL get a bit light -

That's usually only when I end up with a full box, with some sod or roots that keep the box from dumping when I raise the blade - when I had only 400 lbs on the front, the wheelies would happen just going up a hill. In all fairness, I DO have a QH on the tractor, which shifts implements back about 4-1/2" and DOES make a difference - still, that box blade wouldn't have to work TOO hard to stop your tractor -

Things that would help -

If your tractor has a FEL, pick up a fairly full bucket of material and keep the FEL curled and BELOW your line of sight; that'll balance things better, + give your front wheels better traction.

Don't use a QH with the blade, a full box that doesn't wanna dump can exceed your lift capabilities even WITHOUT the extra 4-5" on the hitch.

If you haven't already, add TnT (Hyd toplink and side link) - those will REALLY bring out all the possibilities of that implement.

There are multiple versions of those blades - mine is the one with hinged rear blade - it has the option of being locked DOWN - if yours is that version (AND you have TnT) you may find you leave it locked DOWN - this lets you tilt the blade to the rear, which raises up the FRONT blade and floats the implement on the REAR blade (DIG less, SMOOTH more)

There's an excellent "beginner's guide" to running a box blade on here;
https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums...e-using-box-blade.html?highlight=beginner+box

Don't worry about hurting that blade, just your tractor - the PLUS side is, you can trade up your tractor a LONG ways and not hafta get a new box blade :D
HTH... Steve

More than likely it will be a bit much for your CK4010HST. So unless he gives you a "really" good price, not sure that it would be the best alternative for your application.

Good luck.

$800

Other than some surface rust it's in great shape. The scarifiers and blades look almost unused. It does have the hinged rear blade.

I'll need to bush it to Cat 1 size for the pins unless there's a better way to do that?

Mine cost close to 3k best I remember.

I was looking at a Land Pride BB2572 which is not hydraulic. They wanted $1500+ tax here for that. $950+ tax for the BB1272 which is a lightweight unit. Seems like this is worth a shot.

For that price I would buy it and I have ZERO reason to have it other than to resell it and make some extra $$$$.

Try it, if it works for you, then GREAT. If it's simply to much implement for what you have, you can always sell it and get enough to get a 65" unit that fits your needs better. ;)

l have a Gannon hydraulic HD-315LR, S# T-787, 76" cut, 24" tall back, Swinging rear blade. Have used it on 40 to 105 HP tractors.

Ya, that's my thinking. I bought it.

What do those dirt dog 65" or 72" units cost?

Thanks

Not 100% sure, but I believe in the $1800-$2200 range and you can have it painted to match your tractor. Dirt Dog is the only manufacturer left of these types of box blades.

Agree with Brian; I would buy it in a minute. My first box scraper was a BB2584 I only use it for counter balance if my 3584 is on another tractor; welded some RR track for more weight.

Welp...got it home and couldn't get it out of the bed of the truck! It's massive. Tried rigging it 10 different ways to pallet forks on the loader arms and it just wasn't working. Tractor was tipping a bit (had a brush hog on for counter weight) I do not have loaded tires. I'm thinking I may just sell it and buy something lighter weight. I'm sure the tractor could work it, but when I want to move it on a trailer, etc. it's going to be a pain I think. It looks like it's been used once or twice then parked in a yard. What a shame!

Don't be in a hurry and you should make a nice profit, I'd buy it if I was closer.

Yeah it should fetch a lot more than you paid for it. Wish I was close too, would buy it in a heart beat.

If you have a 2 ton cherry picker, the 1 ton setting MIGHT be enough reach to get over the BB - if so, rig at least 3 slings (toplink + 2 corners for better balance), pick it up, and CAREFULLY drive out from under it.

Once on the ground, your tractor specs say 1631 pounds lift @ 24", so the tractor should be able to lift it (I would probably get a bucket full of material first, assuming your tractor has a FEL)

If your tractor's FEL is like a friend's JD 790, there's no way it would lift an 1100 lb Gannon but once on the ground, the 3PH should.

Agree with others' comments on not being in a hurry, but having an 1100 pound "paperweight" in the bed of your truck might be a tad inconvenient  ...Steve

I have a 10,000 pound 4 post lift in my new shop and we're thinking of backing the truck in, rigging some chain to the lift, lifting the box blade up and driving the truck out and then setting it on the shop floor. My FEL with forks lifted the beast up in the truck bed, but we kept lifting a rear tire when I tried to back away at an angle to clear it from the truck bed due to how high I had to lift the loader arms. I'm sure that with it on the ground I can pick it and put it where ever I want with the forks and some chain. I may hook it up to the 3 point and see how it works before I decide what to do. Just wanted some time to think about it. I'm not licked yet!

I'd say your 10k 4 poster sorta trumps my puny little cherry picker, I'll shut up now ... Steve
