Hello friends,
I almost purchased a brand new Polaris EV recently; but I realized that where I'm going to drive it I really need power steering. The Polaris salesman said it wasn't an option and it couldn't really be added on.
Does anyone recommend an Electric UTV for ranch work that has power steering as an option?
Thanks
Stefan

I used EV vehicles supplied maintenance crews for years and none had PS. They were on pavement and had hard solid rubber tires. For off pavement use, I would not want a non-PS UTV regardless if it was gas/diesel/electric, that is why I bought the RTV900. A work UTV should have PS while a sport UTV can get away without PS.

I would take the QUIET over power steering ANY day! MOST UTVs are just horribly LOUD! With the E-Gator, the only time it becomes a problem is if you have something (possibly a drink) in one hand.

I agree!

It maybe a tall order to find an electric UTV with Power Steering.

My guess the PS system will draw to much amperage from the batteries?

Good luck!

It's strange that they can't do power steering on one since the power steering is electrically powered. I wonder if a universal EPS would fit? SuperATV offers a universal model.

That's what the dealer told me...Power Steering would take too much of the power needed for the motor

I don’t believe a universal EPS system will work. EV’s have a 48 volt system, whereas UTV’s are 12 volt.

If a 48 volt EPS was available, the amperage draw would kill the batteries rather quickly.

Example a 200 watt EPS motor would draw around 4 amps with 48volt system.

The OP would be best served trying a steering wheel spinner knob.

I don't think it would kill the batteries quickly. BUT, it would certainly reduce the operating time which for most of these machines is limited to start with.

48 to 12 volt converters are available in a variety of current ratings. I bought one to run my VHF radio. I don't know about Polaris, but all Golf Carts and the E-Gator, DO NOT HAVE A NEGATIVE GROUND. That created issues for my radio. The aftermarket power steering is probably negative ground too!

I respectfully disagree given the estimated 4 amps is basically at no load.

If a 48/12 converter is used you can expect at least 16 amp draw on a 200 watt motor.

It's a good thing you kids were born when you were, we got along without power steering for many years in full size cars& trucks.
I drove semi's without air or power steering.

So 4 amps at 12 volts? 48 Watts? Like an amp at 48 volt. Trying to think how much and often a power steering motor would operate. At speed, you don't even need it and to keep a vehicle going straight, you don't either, but maybe they never designed it to be as energy efficient as possible. I don't have the slightest idea.

Did you drive the electric Polaris before deciding it was inadequate?

I believe what he was saying is it would be 4 amps at 48 volts. It would be 16 amps at 12 volts for a 200 watt motor.

I suppose the power drain issue does make sense. Most of the electric UTVs are running lead-acid batteries so they have limited power available.

Yes, my apologies for not clarifying my statement.
