Hydro or Gear?

Power to the wheels can be far greater than 15% power loss,,
I like HST,, but, one guy was trying to pull a 2 bottom plow with a HST SCUT,, the tractor could not spin the wheels,,
His previous gear drive always could spin the wheels,, with a similar size engine,

No matter which of the three ranges the transmission was in,, the tires would just stop, when pulling the plow.

I tried this with my HST JD,, yep, the tires would stall,, changing ranges did not help, it just made the tractor slower.

Now, it is kinda useless to spin tires, but, it is a demonstration of engine power to the wheels.
Maybe a unique situation, but, I was able to reproduce the results.

I have never owned a HST tractor that would not spin the tires in at least low range when up against a immovable object. My Kioti will spin them in LO and Med ranges, BUT not in HI when up against a tree. Perhaps AG tires in soil with just the right amount of compaction?

I don’t suspect you’ll ever have a problem with a properly powered machine. It’s only machines that are drastically underpowered to start with that it’s a problem. I’ve used a CK25 that wouldn’t. My Kubota L3240 would but not with a lot of power to spare.

+1 the HST can get very hot under a large load, which means energy wasted as heat, instead of mechanical energy.

I used to plow with a 4630 JD, and disc with a 4430 JD,,
BOTH of those tractors would be hot enough after use to turn water to steam when a hose was pointed at the transmission,,

(My BIL was a fanatic,, we had to clean each machine after use,, so the machines were washed before putting them in the barn,,)

So, a gear drive can get hot, also,,

I'd rather think that 4570Man was simply demonstrating the grammatically correct use of an elliptical sentence to break the tedium of the prosaic rules of grammar that we normally observe on this board when leveling a thinly veiled insult against another member. :laughing:

It seems like most of the anti hydro guys are in the same camp as the anti backhoe crowd. They don’t have one. You won’t find many people that regret buying a HST. And most of the ones that do bought the wrong tractor not the wrong transmission.
