Stuck backhoe pin

Back in the day, I used to deal with this issue a couple different ways. Both need patience.

First, heat the PIN! Yep, expanding the pin in the bore and letting it cool completely was some times all it took to break the rust bond between the pin and the parent metal. Then you could pound it out.

Second, I was pretty skilled with a cutting torch. You needed a substantial one and MAP also helped. I'd carefully gouge out the pin until I blew a hole clear through. Lots of times this was aided by the grease port that would go at least half way through. Then I'd finish it off by clearing a cut all the way through to the parent bore. You have to be patient like I said, but I never nicked the bore! Then pound it out.

Have fun!!

MAPP gas is definitely somewhat hotter than propane, but that hoe bucket pin area is a massive amount of metal to heat.
MAPP with any of those small tank torch heads, would not make any real difference.
As mentioned in a previous post on this thread, Oxy/Acetylene with a rosebud tip is the way to go.

Mapp gas, or a little oxy/acetylene isn’t going to do the job. It’s not necessarily the temperature of the heat but the amount of it. I predict the 20 pound propane torch as being enough heat.

I have a jack hammer, I'm amazed I didn't think of that but that's a great idea.

I'm the one who's amazed. I'm amazed that you happen to have a jack hammer. Good luck, be careful, and let us know how things work out.

The list of tools I don’t have is a lot shorter than the list of tools I do have. That’s why I’m convinced theres a way to make it work with the tools I have, I just haven’t figured it out yet. And now I have a flame thrower!

I was once offered an ice melting transformer, and am kicking myself that I didn't take it. For putting current through steel pipes to thaw them. It makes me wonder what it would take to heat a pin like that with electricity?

The old Fourney welder owners manuals had a page on how to use a welder to do that.

Could one make a pin red hot or would the leads and welder fail first? That is a terribly low resistance to put energy into.

There's a very small hole about 1/4" throught he center of the pin. I have a pointed bit for my jackhammer so I'm planning on putting it in that hole to avoid mushrooming it. I'm going to rig up a tripod to hang the backhoe from that way it will be easy to push against that pin. I believe the boom is solid. I'll put heat against it, can't hurt i hope. then hammer the **** out of it.

That is all but a guarantee to mushroom the pin. You would be better off with a flat faced tool that covers as much of the end of the pin as possible.

I envision them riveting the Titanic.

This thread has convinced me to buy a flame thrower.

Power (Watts) is equal to Voltage times Amperage. The voltage over the pin will be almost zero. The power (heat) in the pin will be almost zero Watts. There is more resistance in the leads/clamps than the pin, that is what will heat up.

That is what I feared. I remember when we bought our JD with 640 loader. It featured cylinders which were "induction" welded. I never did find out what that process entails.

I have another pin that i might be able to line up with it. I wish there was a place around here where I could get big pins.

I see an issue with the nature of the stuck pin. Tight or corroded?. Some heat and persuasion will fix tight. Corroded enough and it might as well be welded.

I will never forget, many years ago I got a receiver trailer hitch and ball at the dump. My Dad and I spent the best part of a day and way too much cutting torch gas trying to get that thing apart. Eventually it was just getting destroyed and had just become a mission to get that thing apart. We did, but it was just all cut apart junk at that point. TOTAL loss! I mean in fairness, we didn't have a press, but certainly enough bangers!

Worst comes to worst he could cut the bushing from end to end. That would release the pin. Weld up the slice and install a new pin.
Or, given the apparent age of the machine, weld a cap back on the pin and run it as is. The pin bosses in the bucket are already worn from being the default pivot point for a long time. How much worse will it actually get given the amount of use it will see going forward?
