19970122 - Install more 1st floor joists.

Took day off work. It appears from the pictures I got rained out. Pictures taken out the truck window. IMG_3154.JPG
2/3 of front half done, back half to end of steel beam. Past the steel beam to the left is another 10 ft section where the porch wraps around.

Roofing tar already applied to some of the Broken off form ties. This is to prevent water from weeping thru. Tar applied where dirt will cover the wall. Will get foundation coating soon.
Note the walk bridge. The front porch footer is 4 ft deep, and then drops to 9 ft at the house wall.

Put a few sheets of sub flooring out to walk on.

Trash bags of the brick ledge foam the foundation crew removed.
I didnt have a dumpster on site, and it took me a few weeks to haul that off.
I saved end cuts of large lumber. Was great for helping hold plastic down on my lumber piles.

Two Dirt piles behind the house, one topsoil and the other fill. I think they dug the porch area out with a backhoe, hence the rocky dirt piles in front of the house.

What did you use for your subfloor?

3/4” t&g plywood. Glued and nailed. My do over would be to screw.

Used advantech when I added the garage, don’t know if it was available back then. Probably was, I just didn’t know it. I used large I beam joists to clear span 24’ on my garage. When I ordered them they mentioned advantech subflooring, wasn’t a big price difference.

Must be the moisture on the plywood that makes it look like OSB with painted edges. 3/4 T&G has been the standard for a very long time. That's what I used in my house, but if I was to do it today, I would use Advantech. I used their 1 1/8" thick T&G on a job for a client and was amazed at how solid it was!!!

You know what, you are right. That is temporary OSB I put down just to walk on.

Ah, that makes sense. I was really struggling to see the tongue and groove edge.

One thing I just noticed is I put a sheet of OSB over the man door on my shed since 2 days before. It is still there 22 yrs later. All the front and side shed osb needs replaced after 22 years.

19970123 thr- joists and subfloor

Took the day off work.
1st floor joists done except for the 10 ft FR extension. Started installing T&G 3/4” plywood subfloor. Glued and nailed. First row started with tongue facing front porch. Every row offset 4’ like a brick pattern. Drive the tongue into the groove. One trick is to not nail the first row all the way to the groove, let it a little loose makes it easier to pound the next piece in, then nail it. Another trick is drive one end in tight, put a nail in it, then pound the far side in. The nail creates a hinge and keeps the first end from popping back out of the groove.
No pictures today, so a preview of tomorrow.

I also had applied roof cement to the concrete ties on the right (west) end of foundation. The garage was later added to this side.

The front of the house faces 10° left of magnetic north.
