Great stuff Lou. That seems like a lot of calves, if you don't mind me asking what it the herd size? I know nothing about cattle ranching.

I'm originally from Buffalo so I love the NY countryside. I can recite all of the trees and identify most anything I see in the woods. I love how many of the trees that grow there are useful in some way. I love the gently rolling hills and the texture of the land. Thanks for the journal entry and pics.

There were 64 Cows and 63 calves in that bunch, about 120 brood cows overall on the farm and hopefully the same number of calves each year.

Do you keep bulls? My neighbor wants to raise beef on my property so I'm trying to get up to speed.

Only occasionally, not wanting to get into the hazards of inbreeding we buy or trade bulls with other farms.
We try to band most of the bull calves as they are born, at times we can't get one done and then when the fly season is strong we hold off to prevent infections.
Of that bunch of 63 calves about half of the bull calves had been banded about 20 are still bulls they got grouped with the other bull calves we have been sorting this spring.
They all got a tetnus vaccination which is actually a 2 step vaccine which we will complete before castrating all of those bulls.
While those cow calve pairs look so nice out on pasture many of those cows will hurt you if you are trying to work with their calves.
We get rid of any of the bulls if they start to get very aggressive, that said even "friendly" bulls can hurt you without even trying to, but it's not a major concern.
Next week when the castrating work begins we will be looking at the bull calves and deciding which ones may stay as bulls, looking back at the weigh history of the mother cow and her calves history and how that bull looks type wise and how fast he has gained weight.

An elderly neighbor on her 5 acres had a dead tree that fell partway across her neighbor’s property line and hung up on a tree at 45° angle over a 8ft deer fence. She said she called for an arborist but due to the state’s restrictions on business, it was not essential. I told her that I spoke with the neighbor and he agreed to help tackle the project. Turns out to be a simple job and found out that the arborist was going to charge $1,800! Just real happy to save her boatloads for a 2 hour job from start to finish!

I put an extension on the rear hydraulics operating lever which has made operating the 3 point linkage so much easier as my Branson is the F47Chn and the lever was difficult to use smoothly

There are adjustable friction clutches on the 3pt and throttle levers. Both of mine came adjusted for too much friction for my taste. I like controls that operate smoothly.

Drilled and tapped bolt holes in gear pump, bought pump in 2019, one bolt failed in feb 2020. Took pump to machine shop, was told pump is aluminum and walls to thin to tap, I figured it痴 broke and I can稚 break it so I used m6x1 thin walled key inserts,it workin so far.. then fuel selonoid quit, took it apart and tested. It was stuck shut, now can someone tell me how to attach spring under control fuel throttle on fuel pump? Took loader cylinders off right cylinder needs rebuilding , won稚 lift boom.
