Re: By pass of seat safety switch - pro's & con's

I don't have a seat safety switch (never had one) and like it that way.
The only safety was to prevent starting in gear. (and that quit working eons ago)**

Some will shudder at how I sand my drive when icy, but it works 4 me.

I lash the steering and walk alongside my CUT while running in 1st low at near idle.
OK, I wear cleats on my boots and always stay to the side while I toss abrasive as I go along.
Have done this for years, and very carefully.
Never even came close to having an incident (accident).

**Oh, and my theft deterrent is to leave the 'safety switch' wires disconnected as it only starts if that circuit is complete.

But note that in low 1 I can actually walk much faster and it's more like moving the sand box the easy (lazy) way.

Back around 1985ish i worked for a large cattle and horse ranch in Montana. We used to fill a trailer with 3 wire alfalfa bales....huge amounts of them daily, Then lash steering wheel, set tractor for slow speed, climb on trailer and feed cattle as trailer moved thru field. Mind you these were huge fields...nothing to hit. They had done this for many years. Theres one old farmer near where i live that feeds his cattle with a team of Belgians. The horses walk on while hes in back feeding...that scares me more than tractor driving itself. Hay..i bet Elon Musk stole the idea of self driving from me... im suing.

As a kid (8-15) years old, fed many square bales of hay off a wagon with the tractor idling along in low gear, no driver (me).

^^^^
Long before either you or Elon, my father would pull out the choke in his Willys pickup and let it idle along while we tossed bales onto the trailer. In 4lo we could walk faster than it was moving.

So this is what I ended up doing.

I really wanted a timer to limit how long the seat switch was bypassed as I knew i wouldn't always remember to disable the bypass. I was all ready to do the relay as per the wiring diagrams and I planned on working an a timer later. (winter job) Then I thought of the toaster oven that had issues. There was nothing wrong with the off/on/timer switch in the oven. So the oven got temporarily rescued from the scrap pile so that I could salvage the timer.

I still needed to do something with the seat switch. It was $80 CAD it the local dealer and I said no. For that kind of money I can rig up a $10 push to start starter switch or a microswitch as a seat switch if I have to. So I tested the switch and it worked ok. Then I went to modify the wiring to attach the bypass switch. There was a wire broken just into the wiring harness so I was glad I'd said no to the new switch.

So now I have a toaster oven timer switch mounted by my ROPS that does everything I want. Time will tell if it does everything it wasn't designed to do. Like 12 volts, vibration and dust.

FYI the red wire on the seat switch harness in a JD 4410 has power with the key on. It's handy to have a service manual even if it doesn't show you how to remove a seat switch!!!!!

Nice!

You could have used some other parts from that toaster oven and made a seat heater.....

I disagree. It's not a lack of practice issue. What you're saying, works ok if you're just moving pallets on level surfaces. I've been driving forklifts ever since I was tall enough to reach the pedals, so it's definitely not lack of practice.

I pick lots of different and random things with the forks, you really need to see the tip of the forks most of the time. Specially offroad, when the forks are not exactly level to what you're trying to pick. Guessing is not going to work.

I tend to agree. At least that is my experience. I added a backup camera that I can use on the front. It cost less than $80 and has worked well. Used magnets to be able to position it as needed. Helps with lining up the SSQA as well.
