Some minor grading, place and spread 6 cubic yards of top soil. Removed 8 cubic yards of “trash” soil and debris.

It was a nice job.

On the way home looked at 2 more, one was aghast that time/material and knowledge cost money. The other completely understands and should be a great customer to work with.

When a person hires someone to perform the work, they should expect to pay for that work/quality/$$$$.

Good job, I'll bet the more jobs that you do, things like estimating and performing the work get to be like semi-automatic/easier.

Enjoy your pics,

yup we see that a lot. especially with plowing. they think we can do a driveway for 10 cause it only takes 5 minutes. plow blade alone costs 6000$ and that with trucks themseves already having push plates/wiring/controller installed.
boss had one week or so ago thought a 150 ft trench could be dug for 100$.
nope.
but i digress.

People are funny when it comes to $/time and materials.
They don;t understand that pro level piece of equipment can cost many 10's of thousands of dollars, not including maintenance, hauling to/from a site and if you have a small business, then overhead like insurance, certs, etc.

Don;t take it personally, they just have no expedience or are trying to get a "deal" .

I had a guy come when I first moved in to grind some stumps. Was here for other stuff and only charged me $75/stump, his grinder cost $30K + new teeth.
If he did not have the other work, there is no way he could have charged me that little.

Lol "aghast". That's a fantastic word and should be used more often.

I find it remarkable that people don't understand that not only are they paying for someone's time but for wear, tear and equipment financing. Here in NY you need insurance out the backside and even special licensing by township to do that kind of work.

Yup they get easier to figure, this one was about $850, that’s $300 in material and tipping fees to get rid of the trash, $45 in mileage and the rest was labor (tractor work) @75 an hour. She was happy.

Next guy was identical just about. Advised him of that, said you’ll be less than $900, he said he was hoping to get it done for $350.....I explained the material alone would be $300 and he was incredulous.....have a good day.

I don’t even write estimates anymore until they commit, waste of paper.

That said, I’m cheap, I have about a 70% commitment rate, I’m happy with that. H

Never take it personal, I always tell customers to get a second opinion and estimate. The ones that do usually say that I’m the best price from all the licensed and insured guys.

At $75 a stump I could keep him busy for the next 27 years...that’s awesome, and going the extra keeps customers happy.

Every once in a while I’ll explain that $30k worth of equipment doesn’t move around cheaply...lol

I can’t believe they have permits for dirt work, that is replacing existing, that sucks.

Luckily here in PA, licensing is reasonable, as well as insurance and I don’t have to letter my truck, and all sorts of other BS like NJ.

One of the landscape company owners that I work with asked me if I wanted a free plow carrier and harness for my truck....not just no, but **** NO! That’s a tough business, with no guarantee....much respect.
