Sure... A Rancher is a pretty good saw, but it's no milling saw...

How's that?

SR
Welllllllllll I thought you might say something like (I'm positive A Rancher won't last long milling logs...), your tac is getting dull.........

I addition to the Alaska mill I also had a rig very similar to the one you posted.
Nail a 2x4 to the top of the log and vertical cut the log.

Do you a ripping chain? Sounds like all you need is to pick a small mill and there are lots of choices nowadays.

Maybe I did not explain my thinking very well

How about a CS mill with a "small" saw (Rancher 455 20" bar) to take off the first 2-3" of a large log so that the log can be handled by a smaller BSM? That would allow a BSM rated for 20" logs to use logs up to 26". In my case, there is no investment in a larger saw or bar...only the CSM and some rip cut chain.

I realize for serious work, time is money. Hobby guys, may have more time than cash. Being retired, I have much more time than $$$.

I agree that a CSM is not a good way to go for cutting any quantity of lumber. Both speed and waste factor into that.
You will probably find that you need bigger than a 455 just for horsepower.
I started with a 62 CC JD and a 28" bar and that was for 20" and less trees. And it felt like I was going to burn up the saw. I quickly moved up to a muff modded Stihl 660 which does well with up to a 42" bar in hardwood.

Liked it so well I bought another,
Then a Stihl 088.

Each was less than $500.

That Woodmizer BSM looks nice, it's about the same price I paid for my LT10 almost a decade ago.

I did use ripping chain, no sense making the saw work any harder.

I thought ripping chains was made for chainsaws cutting lumber because it's easier on the saw..........

Getting back to the original question; they have up to a 12 week wait time once you've made your purchase. I have a really, REALLY hard time shelling out that kind of money for something which hasn't even been built yet.

I just gave up on Norwood (LM29) and Woodmizer (LT15) as they are backed up 9-12 weeks, and their customer service seems slow and very strained right now. Seen reports of Norwood sending out partial shipments, mills missing parts, and some sloppy welds. It would really burn my hide to order a "Cadillac" mill and then not get all the pieces needed to actually saw lumber with it. Haven't heard anything bad about Woodmizer but they are way behind schedule and their reps are very slow to respond, which I don't care for.

I have the month of December off from work (use or lose leave) and want to be ready to saw lumber by December 1. I should have made plans to buy sooner (almost pulled the trigger in the spring and am kicking myself now). I ended up getting one of the last mills Woodland Mills had in stock and it should be here next week. My neighbor has one of their older models and it's been perfect, so that gives me some confidence even if they were my third choice. Their customer service has been above average so far.

You're linking to Cadillacs, I"m looking for a USA made Yugo. :D

I looked at a used LM29 earlier this year. Nice looking machine but at 6K it was well out of my price range. I have no idea what they go for new but there's a company making them down in your neighborhood who would sell me a new one for that.

If you buy one from HF and put it together yourself isn't USA made..........
