Lol "aghast". That's a fantastic word and should be used more often.
I find it remarkable that people don't understand that not only are they paying for someone's time but for wear, tear and equipment financing. Here in NY you need insurance out the backside and even special licensing by township to do that kind of work.
Some people are just pure bs is all I could say, they could give a shiitake about your time, you're equipment, effort, whatever.
Last year, one of my neighbors down the road sent their handyman here, asking help digging out a busted field drain that was gushing water. I was there for a couple hours, all backhoe work, hoe covered with mud...I was digging in soup, basically. So yeh, all that work (the handyman would have been into next week, digging all that out with his shovel), used some fuel obviously, and then spent a good while scraping mud out of my tractor.
For all of that, no thank you, no nothing. Not even a note in the mailbox, what pricks! I was like, you're unreal. I saw the neighbor dude walking down the road past my house one time after that, I yelled after him "YOU'RE WELCOME!!" lol. Needless to say, next time he needs help, he could go fornicate himself.
