10W30 Diesel Oil Recommendations?

I think unopened oil has been proven to be stable for over 50 years.

Sometimes I use oil that has been sitting for a little too long. Not sure if it matters or not but I always shake the jug thoroughly to make sure any additives haven't settled out. I also let the container pour out longer on the same belief that anything that settled might be slower to pour out.

I agree. Even if opened, it'll last for many years as long as it has something to keep dust out of it.

10w30 is plain ole 30w from years ago, not much different from bar and chain oil. Just because it was specified back then doesn't mean you can do A LOT better. The best would be 0w30 ESP (exhaust system protection) but 2nd best would be a good 5w30. I get mine at the local VW dealer. I buy the LL03 Castrol for the 2010ish VW TDIs. Can sometimes find 0w30 ESP M1 for < $9/qt VW charges for the Castrol. It was near $13 at Advance Auto. No sale.

Bet there's some Rotella 5w30 and maybe even some 0w30 available. Just not stocking it in the stores. Very little of the 0w30 ESP M1.

Like I say, 10w30 is likely not much more than the old 30w before they started the xxwxx stuff. Your top end is starving a second or two for oil flow, even in summer time, at startup. The ONLY oil that would immediately refill one of my drained VW Cabrio hydraulic valve lifters was 0w30. Even a 5w30 would give some hydraulic lifter hammer for a couple seconds.

Interesting tidbit though, the Rotella T4 15W40 diesel oil has more TBNs than the Rotella T6 5W40. Doesn't not mean the T6 is a bad oil, juts that I would not trust it for extended intervals (you should not do extended intervals period in a diesel engine, but if you do, the Rotella T6 would be n even worse choice).

Was there ever a consensus about the best 10W-30 diesel oil? I have found it in SHELL ROTELLA® T5 ULTRA SYNTHETIC BLEND, Amsoil, and Kendall, but there must be others.

In my new tractor, I am tempted to use Amsoil simply because you can get it in quarts. I don't understand how people on Youtube are shown hefting a gallon up and pouring it in their tractor without over filling. Guess I will use an empty quart container as a measure. My tractor only holds 3.3 quarts.

I can't think of any engine oil that isn't available in quart containers.

I have to go to my auto part stores and look. But on online sources I see mostly gallons. Of the three I listed, I see only Amsoil in quarts.

While I'm pretty comfortable choosing a 15W40 diesel oil, and there is a lot of selection out there, there doesn't seem to be a lot of options for 10W30.

My questions are:

Do I have to stick with a 10W30? My 2 little tractors (Ford 1210 and a Kubota F2100) both call for it. Is there other suitable options?

What brand would you recommend for diesel 10W30? In the past I've ran no-name (Canadian Tire brand semi-synthetic), Kubota (which I think isa semi?) and Rotella T5 semi. I do not believe I've come across a full synthetic oil for 10W30 that wasn't super expensive. I don't usually go all out on lubricants and try to find the best value.

I use Castrol 5w30 from VW for their TDI engines in both the 2025R and the Isuzu diesels. Out of VW $ now and will look online for M1 0w30 ESP (exhaust system protection) in the future. Use M1 0w20 in the 3 gasoline engines and 5w30 for the lawn mower engines.

Any recommendation for 10w30 would be better with either 0w30 or 5w30.
