The subject of food allergies brings up a tangent point about restricted diets...

Half of all America adults suffer from hypertension and less than a fourth of them have it under control...

Ever watch a cooking show by any of the celebrity chefs and cooking show hosts...they ALWAYS add salt...many times repeatedly...
I have even seen them criticize comments by viewers that complain about them (TV chefs) using too much salt...saying they know what they are doing and basically the average basic viewer is ignorant...!

In the same respect most restaurants do the same and very seldom do you ever see "reduced sodium" versions available from their kitchens...

Folks that have to or need to limit their sodium are pretty much out of luck when it comes to prepared or packaged meals etc...almost everything has salt added...yes you can find some canned goods and and some dry mix products with reduced sodium...but generally to eliminate salt completely you have to start with all fresh meat and produce etc...

IMO...there should be a law that says if you produce a video that shows someone putting salt in recipe they should be made to make a public service warning about the dangers of high blood pressure...[/RANT]

The reason chefs add salt many times is that it takes time to incorporate and absorb into the food. Adding it over time helps it blend into the different ingredients you add later in the recipe, not just the initial ingredient. Adding it at the end is like eating salt from the shaker. I am not a big salt fan, but I do add a bit many times while cooking.

You missed the point...NO salt should be added without a disclaimer...!

sodium is sodium...doesn't matter when its added...it's still poison to many people...ignorance is not learning about or substituting alternatives...

Electing to use a substance merely for taste or flavor that is unhealthy to many is a fools end...!

I come from a long line of salt eaters. If the food dosen't look like powdered sugar was put on top, it needs more salt.

My grandfather was never on heart meds.
My father (70) has never had a heart med
Me, (40) has never had a heat med.

Genetics...

My father used to eat large salt crystals like it was candy in the summer. He felt that he had to replace the salt in his sweat. He died recently at 93. His shoulders and back were wore out from too much physical labor. I don't think the salt affected his life. Oh by the way his blood pressure was low.

The correlation between salt and high blood pressure, independent of other factors, is pretty low.

If you have heart issues, you have heart issues.

Seems more related to obesity than salt intake from what I understand.. and what my Dr. tells me, "lose a few pounds" and I probably won't need any BP meds.

and Butter is poison to me, guaranteed hospital trip, but I don't have nut allergies. Just can't eat in Italian, french, american and most other restaurants. Food allergies are such a pain.

My wife has the nut allergy’s

LoL...
Genetics is also the reason there is so many health issues with purebred dogs...bad joints, short life spans etc., etc...

If you want to learn something eye opening about heart disease and related issues...do some research on the post-mortem studies done on the casualties of the Vietnam war...and the evidence of heart disease and the levels of development in a majority of the cases of those under the age of 20...

LoL...No different than a gazillion other studies on a gazillion other health topics where study results always have a number of possible conflicts in the findings etc...

hehehe...what's bad for you today will be good for you tomorrow...on common health issue opinions and findings change faster than the climate...er I mean weather...LoL...!

The subject really doesn't matter (TBN is proof) regardless of the brain trust there will always be contrarian opinions and findings...it's just human nature and often for some the truth is hard to swallow...!

It is a a known fact that in some patients with BP issues...eating certain volumes of foods with high concentrations of sodium can/will cause immediate spikes in blood pressure (can even result in strokes and heart attacks)...

Can you find the study where it says the body needs salt to survive?

We study genetics a lot in my line of work...

Look back two generations on your family tree and you will see your future.

What?...no regard for diet and environment ?...two huge factors...

also stereotyping does not really apply...a majority of those with hypertension are not overweight...!

Good studies segregate out factors that only serve to skew the data...This is no different.

Now you're contradicting yourself...two generations ago both common American diets and the environment were quite different than they are today...

Oh and just google "couldn't survive without some sodium"....

Yes we need sodium, drink a few gallons of water while running a marathon to prove.
However, each person has different needs, my wife needs cholesterol, while my body, without eating any, produces too much.
Sodium can spike some peoples blood pressure, while others are not affected.
By not sodium loading food, people who are sensitive can be healthier. Just the way it is.

Salt does break down quickly in food, especially if it is warm.
And yes I understand spicing at different times creates a different taste profile, easy to prove with chemistry.

Salt sometimes spikes my BP, sometimes it doesn't. So medical studies on general populations are not very helpful to outliers. Even though the outliers are quite a large portion of the population.

Remember the egg conundrum, are they good for you, bad for you, ends up it's both and you need to adjust your intake of eggs to make them work for you instead of against you.

And I still hate okra!
