I had not realized on how much lumber prices had gone up! It's getting ridiculous I tell ya. I started building a new bird house but had to stop when the bank called and turned down my construction loan.

Not lumber, but I bought schedule 40 pipe today. YIKES! Talk about sticker shock. I spent almost $60 and walked out of the store holding the fittings and 2 feet of pipe in one hand.

Well my lumber supplier finally got some lower grade cedar tongue and groove back in stock. $1.57 a square foot. There will be a bit of waste, but beats paying over six bucks a square foot.

I've often wondered how much is actually a shortage and how much is a manufactured shortage in order to price gouge. Personally I think a good percentage is a manufactured shortage in order to gouge, just my thoughts.
A somewhat simple example, Coke for instance here a year± ago was $1, -$1.25 for a 2 liter bottle, now it's $3+. There's no way their costs have gone up that much. That's a very simple example but you get the drift of my meaning LOL...............Mike

Coke still goes on sale for $1 a 2-liter bottle around here. But the flavored Cokes, like Cherry, Vanilla, Orang Vanilla, etc... production has been reduced or stopped.

Gotta remember tho, US$1 is CAN$1.25, CAN$3 is US$2.37. Still the price increase is ridiculous, I was just using Coke as an example, lots of other things as well.............Mike

I bought some store lumber and plywood the other day and it wasn't too bad. 2x4 8' was about $4. But that's SPF (white wood) and the quality is definitely inferior to the SYP (yellow pine) I can saw with my mill. Also had to spend a lot of time picking through it at the store to get straight pieces, which is a drag. I am going to do a lot of milling this winter to build up my stocks of 2x4 and 2x6 so that I don't need to go to the store and play that game. Regardless of price, it's so much more convenient if I can avoid the store.

I’m a forester. The thing that really is frustrating is that the stumpage prices for timber still aren’t much better than a few years ago. The price increases are on the sawmill and retail sales component of lumber.

Probably due to every one thinking they deserve $15.00 or more for a starting wage regardless of their skill level or competency.
